What-if: Converting the car from an Automatic to a Quaife Sequential

For the purposes of this discussion let's discard reason shall we?...



Imagine I have automatic FR-S and want to swap out the existing transmission for a Quaife Sequential Transmission: I know I need...

• New Sequential Trans
• New Clutch
• New or used drive shaft
• New or used clutch master and slave cylinders
• New or used brake and clutch pedals

...but what am I forgetting? What don't I know? Will have the ECM have to change? Do I need a different wiring harness other then what's on the car? Has anyone attempted this swap?

My bet is the transmission will cost more than the car itself.

In modern cars a whole heap of control modules talk to each other on the CAN buss (Control Area Network)

The Auto trans has an associated control module TCM, and the ECU talks to this, as well as dash, stability control ABS steering control and much other stuff.

If you remove the auto trans and associated TCM then the current ECU is going to get upset as it can no longer talk to the TCM.

And the manual need to get the clutch switch input to start car and other stuff.

you may be able to flash the equlivant manual rom into the auto ECU eg a ZA1JB01C rom instead of the ZA1JB01D rom.

BUT their may actually be hardware changes in ECU or in wiring and the DASH VSC ABS or any other control module may need updates as well to be able to talk to manual software in ECU.

you cannot just swap in another ECU as the eCU/DASH/imobilier module are part of a security set and either need to be swapped in togeather with a key fob or re-coded by dealer (or maybe locksmith)

My guess would be it would be a very expensive and frustrating excersise to swap auto to manual. without even considering the physical fitment issues of the new transmission.

Be far easier to use a manual car for the swap.

I'm sure there'd be ECU concerns. In other words, this would be a PITA/money pit.

Are you looking at like old school transmission type of shifting?

May work if you swap engine+transmission, but I still dont see it on a FA20 due to ECU IMO.

I'll probably do that one day, should cost around 10k€.

That's an entry level gearbox. good ones should cost twice that.
I would put it in a MT car.

Anyway, for street use, that's a bad idea :p

Just trade it for a manual if you can afford the loss. If its a few years old and in good shape you may not incurr loss at all. Most want autos so you could be in good shape

Just get a stand alone ECU.

If you got the car for a deal simply as a platform and you're going crazy with it you'd likely want a stand alone and a different FD. I'm pretty sure you can get quaife to make you whatever gear ratios you want but you'd save some money going with an off the shelf box and changing your FD to match.

They offer different gear sets.

Edit: I mean not custom, but different base configurations.

You'll also need a cam plate to block off the hole after you remove the vacuum pump from the passenger side cylinder head.

You will need some interior pieces for when you remove the flappy paddles from the wheel.

Oh, and the MT version of the brake booster vacuum hoses, because theyre different too. and the clutch slave cylinder and line, because they bolt to the engine and will not come with the transmission. Well, they bolt to the top of the transmission bellhousing, but whatever.

And a flywheel and pilot bearing.

And a bunch of other parts that you didn't mention and I didn't bother to remember or look up.

If you can afford a quaife sequential box, you can afford to do it right and start with an MT car.

Well if you're building a race car from scratch it doesn't matter that much what you start with in this case. But that's only if you're going crazy from scratch, and he did say to throw reason out the window.
