Now, listen up .... sonny.

Are you sure you have a driver's license ...... or just a permit .... ??

Well, your parents should have bought you an FR-S ..... with a AT.

Did you have problems like this with your skateboard ..... ??

How long have you been driving a car (not including video games) ....??

Are you pushing the clutch pedal (the pedal on the left ..... no, not the dead pedal), all the way to the floor when you shift ...... ??

(jest ah messen wich ya .......... )

Seriously, yes, change the transmission oil and see if that helps.

PS - I have been guilty of "talking down" to professionals ...... had a very young looking surgeon that was about to chop out my cancerous kidney ...... and I ask him "how old are you?" ....... he replied by asking me if I would like to be referred to an older doctor ... ??

Then I continued by asking if he had ever done this type of operation before ...... he replied "no, but I did watch a video in medical school about the operation".

After that, we got along just fine......

When I was younger I had a similar experience at a Toyota dealership, which them basically treating me like I'm some punk.

Leave a Yelp review and send an email to the GM. Find another dealership and insist on having a tech ride with you so you can show them exactly what the issue is.

Funnily enough, I'm also a younger dude and I've had trouble with my transmission that they're also blaming on the way I drive, and not the car itself. Even after showing them the TSB for the AT, which is US only and not Canada.

Feels great dropping 30ish K on a car, only to be told to fuck off when I have an issue that they don't want to deal with.

Just took mine in today for the passenger rocker rust and mentioned the 4th gear grind I have also. I have had the grind since around 25k miles and did an amsoil trans(GL4) and diff(GL5) fluid change on it around 30k to see if it helped it. It didn't. I currently have 50k on it. They want to charge $98 just to look at it if it's unwarrantable.

Gen do you drive it hard say 86 in 3rd? I've not noticed any weird noise when I shift but I'll keep an ear out. Then I only really push mine on windy roads

86mph is 7500 RPM in 3rd.

One thing to note: When shifting at or near the rev limiter, the RPMs have to drop further than you would normally expect.
This causes more then the anticipated force to get in gear (syncros haven't matched speeds yet) and more frequently missed shifts until you get used to it.

I have shifted at the rev limiter many, many times.

If they tell you: you can damage the engine by bumping up against the rev limiter, tell THEM "well then maybe you should have set it lower".

Is it, or is it NOT, there to PREVENT damage to the engine?

I think it's an attitude thing.

People treat mechanical problems like venereal diseases, or the plague... There's no reason for this. Everything is an opportunity to learn, or to make the car better.

I don't know if or when I will window the block, splinter 4th gear, or put a rocker through the valve cover, but I know that when I do, I will be smiling

The day my transmission has a problem, the unit is coming out of the car. Immediately. No fussing around with dealers. It's getting opened up and rebuilt right away. If there was nothing wrong with it, I'll button it up and call in a lesson learned, and if it was broken, it'll get fixed.

From an experienced mechanic: Nobody has x-ray vision. The dealer mechanics are not witch doctors, they're high-school grads... If the feeling has changed, then the operating state of some bits of metal or liquefied organic chemicals in the transmission have also changed. It could be normal, or it could be broken. There is no point standing around speculating about a closed case. If it was my car, fifty bucks says I could get a dealer tech to crack open the case. But the only part of the dealership I ever go is the parts counter. With a list of numbers.
