Yep, I don't count a piece of screen over the oil pump, as a "oil filter" .......

I dare you to try pre-refilling ours without spilling oil all over the engine bay. Also I'm pretty sure our cars have a check valve, the filter is only really filled while the engine is like a percolator, hence why when you take it off there isn't oil everything stored in there.

I pre fill the filter every single time and it doesn't spill anywhere

Some good filters have a reverse anti-spill. If you fill it up and let the oil soak in, the oil will not come out if you put it upside down for couple of seconds. I prefill mine and don't make a mess.

I'd be my luck that I'd get one that was messed up and NEVER let the oil out .......

Not pre fill, but do just add a spoonful of oil for early lubrication. I eyeball measurement. Then, I wet the ring gasket and such. When turning on car, I give it about 5sec each key section though. Works like a charm!

Ok, has anybody here ever mistakenly forgotten to properly tighten an oil filter resulting in oil spilling everywhere? Oil passes through the oil filter location pretty fast! I wouldn't worry about filling up the oil filter. Besides, its a small oil filter, so the the oil pump will fill it up quickly.

Just out of curiousity, for the "gotta pre-fill the filter" crowd... what do you think happens to the oil in our upside-down filters once the car's been sitting for a few hours? Should we pre-fill it every time we start the car?

There are some cars where the manual highly advises prefilling the spin-on filters, not only to aid in getting the oil to all parts of the engine faster upon startup but also because, in some engine designs, there's a chance the oil pump would fail to prime w/ an empty filter. The shop manual warned about that in my old Range Rover. It's not a concern with the twins. Lube the o-ring, put on the filter, and be happy.

And what, exactly, do you think you're accomplishing with this?

Heating up the glow plugs on your diesel?

Waiting for my Vtec to kick in yo

ps not necessary. Maybe useless. A practice I will continue to follow. To me it's like washing hands twice. May be useless. I do it. Don't harm me.
