got my FR-S last week and just noticed today that I have the chirping too. I was in the garage (after having been driving around for a while), car running, and I opened the car door and there it was plain as day. Closed the door and can't hear it. Lifted the hood and definitely coming from the driver's side of the engine. I have around 280 miles on it. But I don't know when it may have started since I can't hear it in the cabin with the doors and windows closed.

Check the comments on youtube for this vid.

I neglected to pay attention to whether clutch position had any effect on the sound.

Nice find, but we've been told repeatedly that chirping is normal for DI engines...like this '87 Mustang here

Ok, I believe I have this chirp. However, I noticed it only happens with the AC on. Must be the compressor or pulley. It doesn't happen non stop, but every 20 sec or so..

Very similar sounding noise, but '87 Mustangs didn't have Direct Injection.

I'm certain some of you rode the short bus.

The idea being that every video you find of chirping is associated with a problem of some kind, often a belt. NO engine makes a cricket sound and is considered normal regardless of which part is problematic or what car it is on.

Some of the respondents keep insisting DI engines do this, yet no video of the sound can be found for these various vehicles matching the chirp, only the chatter, which is not the issue or the sound we are listening for.

To think that either Toyota and/or Subaru would create a brand new engine that has a sound like this as normal operation would be an embarrassment to them both. Yet that is exactly what several have suggested. They also ignore that the sound is both infrequent and inconsistent and for many didn't start until hundreds of miles later, all of which should be enormous clues into it not being normal.

Geez, I really didn't think putting 2 and 2 together would be so difficult for some.

You miss my point so bad.... I am not defending the "chirping" as being nothing, AT ALL. My point is, I am NOT going to worry about a sound, that up to this moment has not being proven to be detrimental in ANY way. So far it is a strange sound made by most if not all of our cars. As I posted earlier, WHEN this is an official issue, I will gladly take my car back and have it repair. In the meantime, I will not worry about it. THAT is my point. Stop worrying so much about a chirp that takes nothing away from the car.

If it was only 10-20 cars that had it including mine, I would be worried. Or, if an engine had fail and proven because it was of it, I would be worried. Until then, I'm enjoying my car and not worrying about it. :happy0180:

Well, out of my little statement all of this ^^^ came from you, so I explained to you my point of view on the chirp. My initial "little" statement only meant to say "the fact that a 1987 mustang makes a chirping sound similiar to our cars, does not mean they are related, or equal".

So that's why I said you missed my point, my "little" statement didn't mean to say the chirping sound is ok and there is nothing wrong. I wasn't clear enough so that was my bad.

I've come to the conclusion that the Fuji industry plant has a cricket infestation problem and they started to hide in our engine compartments at night when all the employees went to bed, and during daytime ops they were sealed into them upon final assembly.

Furthermore, when the ambient temperature rises, they get uncomfortable and start to make noise.

I rode the short bus, but that's besides the point.
I actually posted this question in another thread awhile back as well regarding crickets. I noticed with more aggressive or longer trips the noise increases...Not sure if heat has anything to do with it, but its been pretty much over 100 degrees everyday since 31 May when i got my FR-S.
