It looks pretty much like ethanol is directly causing this. So yes I am worried. In CT I cannot get gas without 10% ethanol and with e15 on the horizon....

The fuel pump may last 250k miles while squealing away with ethanol. But FFS if my engine hums along smoothly with regular gas an then 100 crickets wake up when you feed it some alcohol I want that shit fixed.

You have a new car that is under warranty grow some fuckin balls and get it taken care of instead of coming on here to whine about it.

As for the chirp and people saying... ohhh I dont like it, its a noise im not used to... this is the thing from the 90s when people were bitching about the 4runners and a few other cars "ticking" which was the fuel injection then. If it isnt causing a problem then stop wasting toyotas time on it. Next it will be "I dont like the noise of the A/C after you turn the car off".
Not that I care that you are satisfied with a broken car, but my car has been in the Toyota service garage since the second day I had it. I don't see how that takes balls to do... Maybe if you handed the dealership a cashiers check for $25,000 you would be more concerned, but I'm guessing you'll be paying out your ass for the next 7 years on yours.

It's not a ticking either. I've had Nissan 4-bangers and been around them since I was 5. I know what ticking sounds like. This is not normal.

People don't come here to whine. This is a forum, people collaborate and share ideas. The whole section is called "Issues/Warranty/Recalls". If you don't have any issues, get the hell out of here.

Took mine into the dealer today to have them take a look at a few things (chirp included).

Same story, trying to tell me it's normal and whatnot.

Praying for a TSB soon.

I am somewhat apprehensively awaiting the delivery of a six speed Asphalt later this month, and have a question. I actually read through all 29 (at the time) pages of this thread last night, but I don't recall if I read an account from anyone who is running ethanol laced fuel that is not experiencing the chirp. Are there such people out there? Are the lucky 19±% of respondents who are not chirping all outside the ethanol belt?

All the filling stations in North Metro Atlanta where I live pump the summer blend with ethanol.

The diesel sound at low RPM sounds like its a common sound for these engines, at least that's what former Subaru owners seem to say. Ticking is also normal if you are referring to the DI system.

So then it sounds like you don't have a forest of crickets under your hood. If what you are hearing is a loud knocking then that's something different, but otherwise you may be ok.

This post does not have any solution, more like a call to action.

Like most, I only notice the chirp once the car is warmed up at idle. Actually sitting in my garage I noticed that once the RPM hit roughly 1100 the chirping stops (I was careful to ensure that the noise wasn't just being drowned out by the engine noise.)

Some of the comments in this extremely long thread really stuck out to me.

The first is that this car is a freakin' 2013 model and should not sound like this. Another comment mentioned with it being 2012 consumers do have a lot of power by taking to Facebook, Twitter and the like voicing our displeasure.

I can understand how some people do not really mind the sound; however, I think having my brand new car constantly sound like it needs new belts is unacceptable.

With all of this in mind I called the Scion service line to voice my displeasure. I asked if there was a TSB about this issue, or possibly one in the works, and was told that there wasn't. I also asked my operator if she had heard this complaint before, and she said that I was her first call to mention it. She was unable to tell me if others had called other operatiors with the issue.

The call took all of 5 min to make. Rather then all of us hoping and waiting for Toyota to step up and tell the world that they made a mistake with their new pride and joy, we need to all rally and voice our concerns. Making this quick call is much less of a headache then taking a car to a dealership while still being effective in getting our message out.

I implore all owners to call and complain about this problem. With enough calls this issue cannot go ignored.

Edit - I would call the service number and take it in.

When they haven't got a fix they usually deny there's a problem and say you are the only complaint they've had. It must be policy to respond that way.
Best to take it in when it's nice and hot and get the service advisor to listen. They have poor hearing as per company policy but persist and insist that your complaint is addressed. Point out that owner forums have surveyed this problem and 80% of cars using E10 have the chirp that wasn't there until it got E10 and the other 20% must have a hearing problem too.

I'm thinking of filling up this weekend with some 100 octane gas to make my total gas around 94-95ish. Has anyone tried this yet?

It's not the octane rating, it's the ethanol.
No ethanol, E10, no chirping.

I've noticed the engine 'chirping' for the first 20-30secs after a cold start (when the engine is at 1.5k RPM), and once the RPM drops back to 1k, its just as smooth sounding as my old i4 Civic FD

If the vibration is localized to the washer in the high pressure fuel pump, I wounder if it would be possible to encase or enclose the fuel pump or wrap it with something that would minimize or dampen the chirp? Granted, this is not a solution, but it might restore some of the enjoyment of the car while the community awaits a permanent solution from Toyota/Subaru.

Just buy some high quality 2 stroke oil and add 50ml or the equivalent when you next fill up the tank. It's designed to lubricate moving parts via the fuel and even at just 1000:1 it still shuts it up! That's less than 1 teaspoon per gallon.
