LOL Also sounds like my old 66 Corvair. Weird how a boxer engine will sound like other boxer engines. Wonder what cause that?

This still bothers me... It sounds almost like an exhaust leak. I keep telling myself that it's a combination of a boxer layout, direct injection and basically zero sound insulation on the firewall... but still... It's a disconcerting sound.

I'm also perplexed by the "sucking" sound on more aggressive throttle tip-in. I hear it most often when shifting quickly at medium to high (4-6k) RPM. It almost sounds like it's coming from the accelerator pedal itself (probably misleading) but obviously the sound only occurs with the engine running. It happens at idle as well. It sounds a lot like what my old MR2 turbo sounded like when quickly getting on the throttle... but in that case it was the bypass valve allowing some pressure through before it snapped shut.

The best description ever heard was "It sounds like an old Russian tractor".
I have got used to it and don't even notice anymore but for a couple of months I thought it was going to blow up at any moment.

Have you plugged or deleted the "sound tube"? Some like it but I just found the noise obnoxious.

Yeah, I plugged the tube. Honestly, I don't notice much of a difference plugged or not. Maybe I'm focused too much on the ticking and sucking sounds... Oh, and the crickets... I'll try to make a set of high quality recordings and post them so everyone can understand what the "normal" sound is (or tell me that what I'm hearing is not normal )

Oh they will all be normal I am sure. These things are noisy as hell but rest assured you get used to it. I would panic now if some of my clicks and pops went away.

Yeah. The boxer 4 really doesn't muffle modern engine sounds very well. Most inline and V layouts are able to bury the loud bits under large intake manifolds, heavily insulated plastic engine covers and various heavy chunks of metal. No such luck for us. With my old 2004 Impreza the ticking came mostly from the valve train. Same issue though.

Wonder if I surrounded it in spray foam or other type of heat proof sound deadening material if it would help? Anyone know of any stuff to try? I'll be the guinea pig car if anyone has any ideas? I don't know if the shield around it is for noise or just shielding of another purpose.

Well, I promised a recording... here it is.
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php...60906159705627

This was recorded from the driver's seat with the car warmed up and my sound tube plugged. The first 15 seconds are just idle. Then I rev the car a bit. You can hear at ~15s the car stumbles a bit when it tries to rev from idle.. then you can hear the "puff of air" or sucking sound I was talking about each time I press the pedal down quickly. This happens all the time and is especially noticeable on rapid up-shifts at mid-high RPM. I'm pretty sure the idle tick is normal but the puffing sound has me stumped. It's not mechanical noise from the pedal assembly because it's dead silent with the car off.

I posted earlier about my 2016 BRZ with 4k miles that started chirping and stopped when I used Chevron gas from a specific station... I think that was just coincidence because even though I've continued to fill with the same gas the crickets came back and haven't gone away after another 1k miles. In fact they are louder than ever now. I can hear it over the radio with the windows up!

Same with mine, I was using Shell V-Power, then i switched to Sunoco Ultra with up to 10% Ethanol and the crickets are barely audible. Find fuel with 10% or less Ethanol.

I have crickets with 2400k on my '16 Limited. I only used Shell Nitro 93 since purchase. I didn't exactly follow break in procedure, though. I haven't tried any other fuel.

Break in has nothing to do with it.
I use about 5 different stations/brands since I travel so much and at this point can almost predict to the minute when they will start or stop based on what gas I got where and what temperature it is outside.

Good to know. I thought that it would have an impact because the first bit of driving I was mostly on cruise control.
