OK, so I have to admit, so far as I know, my car NEVER had crickets. I used to come to these threads and kind of frown and shake my head, wondering if everybody was just overly sensitive to the sound or if maybe there was something wrong with my pitch and I just couldn't hear it. Once, I even sat there with the hood open, sticking my head and face above the engine, twisting my head left and right, actually HOPING to hear something. Sure there was lots of mechanical noise, but nothing like was usually described.

I bought my FR-S new last July, but had it in the garage all winter. I still only have about 2,700 miles on the odometer. Yesterday I brought it in for the first (free) oil service. As I sat in the parking lot after the service, with the car idling, as I made a quick phone call, actually while I was on the phone, I suddenly heard it…..CRICKETS! WTH? NOW I hear it? It never did this before. Why now? Why after the service? Why with a fresh oil change? Is it because it's a warm day? No, I drove it last August and September on days when it was in the 90s and didn't hear it. Maybe it's because the gas in the tank is from last Fall? Maybe, but why didn't it do this on the way to the dealer. Or last week when I drove it.

All this time I was thinking I was either cricket free or the cricket problem was seriously over-blown. But when I finally heard it, it was immediately obvious. Just so odd (and probably a coincidence) that it didn't happen for the first 2.5K and it manifests itself after the first dealer visit. So odd.

Well I got the dreaded crickets in my BRZ, 6,800 miles into its lifespan. It doesn't really bother me since I can only hear it outside and not in. Should I go through the trouble of getting fixed or no? I still got warranty.

I say no. The design issue hasn't been fixed, so the crickets will just come back with a new fuel pump. And it's not really a performance problem. It just sounds funny. Personally, I don't want to take my car in for warranty work unless it's necessary, for two reasons:

1. If you were to read back through the 181 pages of discussion in this thread, you will see stories about people taking them in for crickets and driving out with worse problems because the techs didn't button everything back up properly, and...

2. I don't really want to piss off the service department with warranty claims that are not really necessary, then have them treat me as the boy who cried wolf when I have a real issue that needs to be addressed. I can't help but think that these guys who take their cars in to have the fuel pump replaced repeatedly will get blown off when there's a noise or vibration signaling an actual problem. I could easily see the techs saying, "Oh, THIS guy again," and letting it sit in the shop for a couple of hours, then writing it up as "could not reproduce issue" and sending them out to a catastrophic engine failure.

Sounds like they''re just modifying your current fuel pump with the newer parts. No it won't work. Even if it is the latest fuel pump, it still won't work. Sorry to not get your hopes up, but that's kind of where the issue stands. Toyota and Subaru aren't doing shit about it nor trying very hard to find a real solution.

I took delivery nearly 2 years ago and despite trying various fuels and 3 fuel pump replacements, the crickets remain. When will we have salvation from this plague.
