My chirps come and go and I'm at 13k miles. Whenever the fuel pump does chirp it's actually pretty quiet now. Hasn't been nearly as loud or consistent as my chirps prior to 10k miles.

I'm now 1 week on the new pump, car sounds fantastic...hopefully it will stay that way. Funny thing, first day coming home I was driving with the windows down (normal after work in FL) and when I took my foot off the gas coming into my neighborhood my mind put some chirp noises into my head. It's like my brain was substituting for missing chirping. Here's hoping for many more miles of a non-chirp engine

LOLZ...I felt the same way too. It's like my brain notices something missing and tries to fill that empty space. After all the noise I've been dealing with, it's kind for jarring to me to hear the car so "quiet."

My mind was playing games with me on the way home from the dealer. Then after the first tank of gas in a Petsmart parking lot, first thing that came out of my mouth, "You gotta be shitting me" and popped the hood. Crickets!

Oh boy, here we go...

Final update: 6 people, both Toyota and Subaru engineers were with my car for the past two days. The fuel pump is made by a company called Champion. There is no marking or part number on the pump that shows it. They mentioned that the tune I'm running may be causing a rise in temperature too high on the fuel pump causing the chirp. They also blamed the tune for "possible direct injection failure" as you'll see below in the uploaded document. I said I can flash it back to stock gladly, but it will throw CEL for the catless header on the car. You will get chirping either way with the timing adjusted on the tune. What they did do though, they insulated the fuel pump, and are waiting to hear back from me after several miles. They want to know if its still chirping because they're confident this pump has no issues and is supposed to resolve the problem. I'm still confident they have no idea what's causing it even though I told them the ethanol content in the gas is the key component to a lot of this. Regardless, I'll just drive my car and report back. Just don't want to sit and play the cat and mouse game forever. We'll see what the insulation does. I posted a video below of what it sounds like after driving home about 10 miles from the dealership to my place. Same pump, not making any noise, pure cold start. Apparently they have a fuel pump on order for me in case I do report back with chirping and they'll want to replace it and take this one for taking it apart and finding out why its still failing.

Figured I'd share this with my findings. I told them stock cars are chirping all over the place, so a tune is out of the question.

Finally voted in this poll. ~800 miles in, don't even know what the cricket sound actually sounds like. 93 E0 only.

How long do the parts normally take to come in?

Local Toyota/scion ordered about 2 weeks ago. Said would call when they come in.

I noticed mine started chirping around 800 miles. Currently have ~1,100 miles on the odometer.

Interesting about the insulation of the HPFP.

The 2014+ Forester XT comes stock with an insulator cap installed over the HPFP, probably to dampen the chirping noises.

I have been considering ordering this piece from my work and installing it, but since I have installed the JB010 pump and haven't gotten a noise yet, I have back-burnered the idea.

If my chirps ever come back I am going to get the insulator, install it, and report back my findings.

AFAIK it was around $20-30 max

Glad you feel taken care of, Toyobaru have been kind of hit and miss on that front if you go by the postings here.

Hate to say I told you so...

How the fuck does a tune create a mechanical noise in a unit that isn't affected by said tune? If it's creating enough heat in the dead of winter to cause parts to surpass their qualified temperatures the thing should have exploded during a Texas summer. The line about potential injector failure is bullshit and they're covering their ass (although aftermarket mods could lead to seal failure there is zero reason to bring that up here unless they plan on screwing you already, taking note of the mods should be sufficient). I'm basing this on the assumption that you have an exhaust and a tune and nothing more.

I think Toyobaru should be more careful who they call 'engineers', you'd figure someone who dumped tens of thousands of dollars into a degree would know the difference between 'effect' and 'affect'.

@FR-S Matt, I'm surprised they are willing to do what they are doing. I would have expected them to say "oh, you modded it? We will move on to someone who is still stock and figure out their issues". To be honest, I would have too...

Yep, intake, exhaust, and a tune. Nothing more done. At one point I thought they were going to try to flash that RPM TSB that came out, and I would have been pissed if they did. To me it sounded like they were trying to find an excuse to blame it on to put something on paper.

Don't know why they tried to scare me with DI failure. DI failure happens on stock tuned cars too, lol. Like I said, I think the pump insulation is the best thing I got out of this. Oh well, I'll report back after several miles, and a few gas tanks to let you guys know how this insulation is working out.

That's why my dealership is awesome. I told them I could flash it back to a stock tune, but it's not going to change anything but throw a CEL on the primary cat. They know people are going to mod this car, but I don't even consider my "modding" to be heavy modification. The ECU timing has been adjusted, all of the internals are stock. I didn't touch anything with the fuel pump.

I told them there are several 86's in Austin that are chirping just a few hundred miles off the lot, even the 2014's if they don't want to use my car because it's tuned. Thousands of people to choose from that have the chirp, and some don't even realize it because their mind is so attuned to the sound.

Just got my car back yesterday.

Had my service rep order parts back in Nov, and had to call for a follow up to find out why they hadn't gotten back to me. When I called I talked to the service manager, and he looked it up, noticed that they had ordered the parts over a month ago. He checked and found out that they had the pump in stock for another customer so decided to give it to me since I was waiting longer. Net result at 11152 miles got the new pump installed all covered under warrantee.

If you are having problems getting services... make sure you do two things.

1. Take video on your phone of the chirping. (if you just drop off your car they may say... we didn't notice anything abnormal)

2. Take a copy of both TSB's Subaru and Toyota's with you

Everyone at the service department kept on saying it was a RARE problem like they had been told to say it.

I'll post updates if I notice the chirping return, you will notice the car sounds different with the new pump.

Here is a copy of my service invoice
