It could actually work against Toyota. If the kiddies today think that Scion is cool with the 20-somethings of today, they will want their own cool brand when the time comes. Scion will be 'old' to them by then, if their attention span is really that short.

You just reminded me of the handful of older guys I've had come up to me asking questions. They always say something along the lines of "My son really wants one of these" or "This is my son's dream car" or "I'm thinking about getting one for my son" when I'm at an HPDE/Autox or out and about.

Thing is, I'm not sure if this theoretical son is 13, 23, or 33...

I could never get away with that because like many "Gen Ys" my 30 year old son does not drive, has never driven and never likely ever will. Of course the people on this forum do not fall into that aspect no matter what their generation.

How the hell does that work? Did he even get a G1?

Then again, my 21 year old brother is still on a G2, which is set to expire within a few months. My Girlfriend only has a G1. Seems so weird to hear about people over 20 who don't have a license.

It isn't that strange really and becoming more common all the time. He is a city boy that never really needed to drive anyplace and has less than zero interest in cars so why learn.

Is it just assumed that these kids won't ever be able to buy their own stuff? I know a few people with younger cousins / siblings who have had parents signing on their mortgages. This is after buying / giving them cars.

Seems like they should be directly targeting the parents of Generation Y.

Spent two years up at college without a car, had a bicycle and bummed rides off of family and friends when absolutely necessary if the bus didn't cut it.

A halfway decent public transit and being in area where all your needs are within reach makes it pretty easy. Sometimes parents willing to drive you everywhere is a pretty handy crutch, my brother didn't get his license until he was 20, and he won a local karting championship as a kid and can tear it up on a dirtbike.

My sister's husband just got his license two years ago, and my other sister's boyfriend doesn't drive.

If you live in the city, a car is an unnecessary expense that doesn't help you get around any faster. Unless you need to get somewhere that the trains and buses don't run, there's no real need for one. Even then, a zipcar may be the more sensible option than owning.

My son fits your description perfectly except that from about the age 15 up I never had to give him rides anymore. He was popular in highschool (was Prom King) and he got rides from some very interesting school mates with a simple phone call.

I don't get the ad, or the clothes (such as the misc. straps hanging out of the shirt/jacket thing...??).

Then again I'm not part of their target demographic.

It was this way for the prior generations too, we just forgot. Baby Boomers had a great socialist movement with cheap education and plentiful living wage jobs up to the mid-80's, you bet your ass a good chunk of them got parents co-signing or helping out with downpayments or landing their first real job from a friend of Uncle Joe's at that company down the street. Everyone I've talked to has had at least one story where they got a leg up from a relative regardless of generation. Hell my grandfather had his father help him join up with the military as a teen (Korea) to avoid some local trouble, or so the story goes.

The 'I had to walk uphill both ways!' is bullshit for every generation and we'll spout it too. "Yeah my parents fronted me a 'modest' downpayment, but I had to pay that back with interest! You're lucky how good you've got it!"

Did you know that if you have no credit, cell phone companies want a $500 deposit before they'll trust you?

AHMEN!!!!

I had to borrow part of the money from my parents for my first car. That was in 1975 and it was an $800, 11 year old, rebuilt beater when I got it. Hell, I had to scrimp and save to replace the tattered convertible top which was sort of a necessity in a Canadian winter. The new cars were so far out of my price range it was ludicrous to even think about buying one even though I had a job from age 13.
Things have not changed as much as some would have you think.

If you're married and over 30 when your parents are still co-signing for you, then you're the person I was talking about.

Co-signing on a first car loan is not uncommon or unreasonable.
