Most European locales will do the afternoon break but not quite like Spain, heh. The trade off - if you want to climb any career ladders you're leaving work between 8-10 pm, then dinner, then home.

but that's the thing

so many people focus on their careers rather than family time. Sure it'd be nice to make $150 000+, but i remember reading that the happiness level kinda plateau's once you're around $70 000 - $80 000

i remember being in a meetings at my previous job and my VP would miss a ton of family things because of late running meetings. fuck that.

True, they do work later, but they also stay up much later than here in the US since they sleep twice a day... I remember being completely thrown off by seeing a group of 85+ year old ladies dressed to the nines getting tapas at midnight. I just stared thinking, "damn, my grandparents are in bed by 8:00, and here you are having dinner in the middle of the night!"

Our front yard on the Big Island. It overlooks Waipio valley. On a clear day you can see Maui in the distance. Aloha!

Once unemployment runs out, the US stats don't consider that person unemployed anymore whether or not they found a job.

It also doesn't take into account that someone may have taken a big haircut just to keep from foreclosure.

I made it to my father's birthday for the first time in 6 years or so this fall. I have missed so many functions that people don't bother sending me invites anymore.

Just need to get a little wiggle room and then I can try to scale back on work... Of course I've been saying that for over 10 years and just keep finding more ways to spend money on things other than the 'wiggle room' I claim to be working for.

It's hard not to miss the warm embrace of the ocean. I have to drive to it once every 2 months.

family functions > any amount of money

i had a job before working 12 hours a day Monday to Saturday. It sucked missing those Saturday afternoon family things. One of my favorite times is just have big family breakfast, lunch, and dinners.

At least it's close to you! I get the cool Canadian Rockies so I shouldn't complain.

Balance guys. Balance work and play. The problem is, the best play costs the most money. The best paying work often requires the most time.

Just landed I'm Maui and wish I had my brz with me for all the twisty roads I've encountered so far.... I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but any suggestions on things to do while I'm here? I'm here for a week.
