Anyone going to Tanso Drift at the Fresno Fairgrounds tomorrow? Has anyone been to any of their previous events? I don't know if I'll drive out from Hanford yet, but if it's a decent event I may drive up after I get off from work.
@SilentAngel: What types of jobs are you looking for?

Pretty much anything i can get. My last job was at a pawn shop and I had been there since my junior year in high school which was about october 2007.

I have a lot of experience dealing with customers and Microsoft Word Suite. I'm really computer oriented and i want to get my certification's in A+ for computer repair and networking.

I used to run all of the errands and make the bank deposits for the store i worked at, and also did the payday loans. I was the only person that knew anything about the game consoles or computers so when they foreclosed i was in charge of restoring them to factory defaults and making sure they were in working condition before putting them out for resale.

Have you tried any of the IT departments at hospitals in your area? They often have needs for people to maintain the systems they use. Everything's computerized now.

I've been in IT for years and have been a part of the hiring process and while A+ is good to have on paper, it doesn't really hold a lot of meaning on its own. Experience, motivation, and genuine willingness to learn are much more desirable than A+.
If you're thinking about working in a break/fix or support role, go for it and highlight your experience and knowledge.
If you're serious about getting into IT, look into getting vendor-specific education and certifications (although in my experience these kinds of vendor certs are usually offered on the job) . Network+ is also a lot better to have than A+, IMO.

I've got a few Valley connections in IT and I'll message some of my friends and see if their businesses or any clients are looking for some entry level IT.

I've looked, but they all want people that have experience in the field for about 1-2 years+ and i'm just barely starting out with learning most of it.

Ok kool! I've been interested in computer's for a long time now and i still don't really know much, but it's one of the only things that make any sense to me when trying to learn a new subject and it's fun to. Pretty much originally i was just thinking about getting the A+ and then later on the Net+ certs, and then trying to get some sort of computer repair job for some large businesses and a few civilian people, i would either join up with a repair business or try it on my own and work out of home.

I went and talked to a counselor at the University of Phoenix in Fresno this last week and she said that a degree stands out more than anything else, which isn't what I've heard from others. So i didn't really believe her especially when she said that classes would be once a week, for 4 years to get a bachelor's in IT, and then it would be like $50,000, it sounded more like she was trying to make the college more money than anything. I want to learn what i can about computer's so that i can work with them and get a better understanding of them, I just don't know if that program is really worth it. If what your saying is true, and a lot of companies are just looking for people willing to learn and offer the cert's there, that is way more ideal than trying to go to college for 4 years and then still have to job search everywhere to get hired somewhere all over again.

I'm still new to figure out how exactly a college helps, especially when they are so expensive, but i'd still like to try getting into some sort of IT field and if i have to go to college i will, but right now i'm not to sure they are worth the time and money.

Thanks for the info and help!!

I agree with Ein. If you are passionate about computer, you can go a long way. People see what you're capable of especially if you have personal projects on github or similar. I went to a jr college for a few years taking classes I was interested in, but they were only jumpstarts.. I learned more by buying books, reading online, and personal projects. I do wish I had a full degree though, that makes it much easier to get in the door, and is pretty much required for any higher management positions. College is about foundations, not necessarily what you learn will go into direct practice.

For example, IT is all about troubleshooting. How good are you at researching on Google? What experience can you bring to figure out a solution.. How fast can you weigh using a temp solution vs fixing the real problem.. How well can you estimate the time it will take. Some times we takes this for granted.. We have someone at work who just can't use Google very well. They just use the wrong keywords and can't find what they're looking for. For me Google is like an extension of my brain, just like a car is an extension of your body. We would more likely hire someone that learns fast and has passion vs knowledge from school.. Kind of theory vs practice. But in the end, you do need some theory to think abstractly and think of problems in multiple dimensions.

I started off in IT, but I've always been a programmer at heart. I'm now a user interface software architect at a mobile game company.. I'm older btw

God luck!

Yea, that makes sense. I can troubleshoot fairly well, and I built my computer from parts i ordered off of newegg.com. I can also Google really well, like you said its almost like an extension of your brain or even like a best friend with all the answers lol. I don't usually like quick/temporary fixes, I typically like to fix the issue despite how much extra time it may take, however if the only thing that can be done is a quick fix then i'll still do it. I guess an example would be to clear the cache and temporary internet files on a old computer to speed it up a bit, when it really needs more RAM or an upgrade and the client not having the funds to do so at that point in time (just recently did this for one of my friends not to long ago).

I'll be 24 on the 10th lol.
