Very fortunate

To now be in the situation where I can have the car for an extended period of time. My wife just purchased a 2016 Lexus IS300 AWD, which means I can park my FRS during the winter months and drive her old car in the winter. Plan on keeping mine for at least 10 years.

I bought this car wanting to keep it until I pass it down to my nephew when he gets old enough, he's 6 now. Unless Subaru released an STI hatch or something that really catches me eye I'm keeping mine for years to come.

Planned to keep it for a long time, but ended up totaling it yesterday (Nov 1, Sunday)... hopefully I may pick up another twin in the future.

I planned on keeping it until I could no longer afford to keep fixing it. Unfortunately, the car needed a new transmission and threw a severe check engine light (P0016, dealer found silicone sealant clogging oil pickup tube screen) within 4 months of each other.

After those two rather major issues in less than a year and a half of ownership, along with other minor gripes that I feel shouldn't happen in a brand new $26k car (interior rattles, leaky tail lights, super thin paint, etc) I lost all faith in my car. I'm not saying all 86's suck, but mine sure did. So I switched to something more practical, a Ford Fusion. I miss the BRZ quite a bit, but when I remember all the things I couldn't stand about it the feeling subsides.

I will probably keep it till the thing blows up. Judging by the build quality of our car it probably will not last for more than 5 years.

At this point, I'll be keeping it until I won't be taking a hit on trade in. Then I'll be getting something bigger, with interior room.

All of my transmission issues, and an unhelpful service department are really killing the love I have for the car.

This applies to just about everything labeled a 'sports car' except for some very rare cases, they all need a little bit of special attention that the cars designed as appliances don't. Those mint condition classic 240Z's and Mustangs still hanging around weren't treated like Camrys and Geo Metros.

I hope to have this car for another five years. I should have around 180,000 miles on it at that point.

I can't see myself driving anything less agile or "connected" in the future, so hopefully Toyota keeps making similar vehicles.

That is usually our cycle too. But my wife let me "go to the front of the line " when she saw how important this car is to me. She's a long term keeper. So is the wife.

I need to re-negotiate my deal with the wife. The deal was she gets the new car, I get the hand-me-down when she replaces is and I get a used toy/weekend car to keep (outside of the rotation).

Somehow its changed to her having a summer (FR-S) and winter car (Outback). And now she wants to trade the FR-S towards a Focus ST.

Dang. Ive somehow been left out of the rotation.

On a similar plan. Amortize cars to zero over ten years. Gives us time to save up the $$$ so we don't need loans. Basically we make payments to ourselves for 10 years.

Difference is we are in sync and its kinda fun watching the bank account take a monster swan dive!
