I was under the impression to maintain STX you have to have a cat within 6" of its OE location. Perhaps I'm missing something though -- it is Monday.

It allows for the removal of 1 cat as long as you still have 1 cat in the car. the 1 cat remaining has to be within x number of inches of its original location.

i'm sure i'm missing some key verbiage in there, but that's the gist of it, if i recall correctly.

That is true, but there is a cat in the front pipe as well - so you could run a catless header with a catted front pipe and remain legal. Or a catted header with a catless front pipe.

That rule applies to the cat furthest back in the exhaust system. Since this car has two (1 in the header and 1 in the mid pipe) you can get rid of the one in the header and have a high flow in the mid pipe.

You just have to have 1 cat within x inches.. I don't think it lists a specific number of cats that you can remove, because some cars have more than 2.. IE 02-05 wrx has 3, and i'm pretty sure you can remove all of them but 1.

edit: actual rule

E. Catalytic converters: Any catalytic converters are allowed, but must
attach within 6” of the original unit. Multiple catalytic converters may
be replaced by a single unit. The inlet of the single replacement converter
may be located no further downstream than 6” (152.4mm)

along the piping flow path from the original exit of the final OE converter.

The extents of an OE converter are defined by the expansion
chamber in which the catalyst is contained, regardless of placement
within larger exhaust sections. Replacement converters must have

a minimum catalyst density of 100 cells per inch and minimum substrate length of 3” (76.2mm).

Yep, you're right. At least I had the general idea right.

The difference in price and performance between the two is what'll do it for me. I don't want to cut up shrouds and stuff in the interest of returning to stock...but I'm not going to leave 20hp on the table.

Exactly.

I highly doubt it'll be over a 10hp difference. That being said, I don't have plans to leave the region for autoX. And therefore care very little about the class my car ends up in.

I am a bit late to the thread... and I have not read all 94 pages.. tbh, I am a bit new to cars but my new FRS is turning me into a car enthusiast.
I have been shopping around for mods that will grant me more power without voiding my warranty so... a turbo/supercharger is out.
therefore, I am stuck with intake/exhaust/weight loss and other trivial stuff.. I cannot, for the life of me, find much out there for aftermarket headers.. not even Perrin sells a header. This dude does.
Can someone answer my questions?
Why, if adding on an aftermarket header, do so few companies not make headers if they can add a great deal of power?
Are aftermarket headers legal? Will I pass emissions in Mass with them?
I dont believe it will void my warranty if I get one..
Last question.. where the blazes can I get one that meets the demands I listed above?!
