I asked my dealership about this. Apparently there are 2 sets of rollers that hold on to the window (and move the window up and down). Whatever is helping it grip tight leaves a residue.

Rain-X

1) Using Rain-X reduces the likelihood of needing to use the windshield wipers
2) Using Rain-X allows the excess wiper fluid to flow down the contour of the windshield, thus leaving less fluid to dry up and cause the line.
3) Less residue will allow for easier clean-up to prevent the OCD
