Last year, while I was shopping around for a car, I test drove multiple sporty cars. A 2010 Mustang GT, a new 370Z, a used C6 Corvette, RX-8, the newly released Camaro, WRX, etc

Apart from with the used vette, I always made a point of asking if I could place an order with the exact specs I wanted, and every single dealer said yes.

Granted, you aren't going to be able to get the car at a LARGE rebate, as you can sometimes when it's been sitting on the lot for a while taking up space, but I've generally not had to pay too much over invoice for anything I've purchased.

If a dealership is tryin' to tell you that what's on the lot is what's available, they're just yanking your chain. They want to make sales, and if they can only make your sale if they place an order for a specific car with their next batch of incoming, they have no problem doing that at all, so long as you are willing to wait till that order arrives and sign a paper stating your intent to purchase. Just make sure that paper has the agreed to price you will be paying on it, otherwise you could get jerked around.

I did some more thinking..

hatch liftback. the concept seems to have this, and the utility factor would go way up.
taut, direct, tactile steering feel. none of this overboosted shit.
i guess i could read up on this, but i really hope its easy to work on (easily accessible oil filter, drain plug, spark plugs, fuel filter, etc). i like to work on my cars and i hope this one is conducive to that
and yeah.. timing chain or belt?
Yeah, I actually hope it comes with Drive by Wire. Those systems work hand in hand with the engine controls, and some VERY interesting things can be done with them.

The best example I can think of is the upcoming Ford Mustang BOSS. As an option, the car can be outfitted with 2 different sets of keys. One key, when used to turn the car on, uses the normal throttle/ecu mapping, and then there's the "race" key. When you use that key to turn the car on, all the systems boot up in full on attack mode, with the ECU no longer holding onto revs, hyper-aggressive throttle response, different fuel mappings, etc. Booted up in that mode, I don't believe the car passes emmissions standards, but since it's not something that can be turned on/off just within the car (it requires a separate key), it's legal and does not affect the EPA tests.

While something like that will almost undoubtedly NOT make it into the FT-86, if the car has a drive by wire system, a competent tuner could program their own version of it, and make it selectable using the inside controls in the car, just like ECU tuners can let you select a profile for your car. I have my car chipped, and using the cruise controls, can select between three different settings: Stock, 91 Octane tune, and 93 Octane tune. Including more aggressive throttle mappings in a tune like that would be a piece of cake, assuming the car came with Drive by Wire. It would also mean that when I didn't want my car to behave like a rabid werewolf, I could just leave it in stock mode.

DBW can include things like Cruise control, traction control, etc. with less weight and complication than a manual throttle too... I've heard the 'lag' (which I absolutely HATE) can be tuned out, whether by the manufacturer or using another system...

the lag can absolutely be tuned out. case in point: 2002 M5. 8 throttle bodies, all DBW. in "normal" mode, the throttle response is crisp. in "sport" mode, it's too razor sharp to be comfortable on the street. it will do EXACTLY what your foot tells it, immediately when you think of moving your right foot. it makes pulling away from a stop a little bit jerky if you're not super careful with the throttle and clutch.

lag will be tuned out assuming toyota can do this because ive driven a very frustrating volkswagen passat which had very late throttle response and let me tell you, its not fun one bit. With toyota having trouble with uncontrolled acceleration and sticking gas pedals we'll see how well the throttle response programming can be.

Toyota did not have any problems with unintended acceleration. it was investigated and determined to be pedal misapplication (DRIVER ERROR), but funny how that wasn't front page news...

^ Bingo.

I really hope the lag will be tuned out from factory. Driving my dad's Mitsi Outlander is terrible IMO, I can stab the throttle to the floor and back with aboslutely no chnage in revs what-so-ever. Just feels wrong!

Blitz and others have us covered.

Edit: Curves show the different mappings. Red is stock, notice how for the first bit it hardly moves. Blue is Bitz's map and the black line is a cable.

^ That's the type of thing I was meaning by 'I will make it happen regardless of whether Toyota does it for me or whether I have to go aftermarket to get the throttle response I'm looking for'...

I want a HUD. You may ask, WHY?

Well because this is the future and with a HUD installed on this car... specially this car!!!, it will feel very futuristic.

If you look at the concept, it looks very futuristic so why not add a HUD?

HUD- Heads up display

google: pioneer HUD CES

HUD is nice, but I don't need it. If I was going to buy an expensive car then I would totally want it, but FT86 gonna be dd car & weekend track car. I highly doubt I'll be using HUD for it.

Defi has an aftermarket HUD. I don't want to pay up front for something like that.

I endorse this message. I'd also want optional Brunette, Red head, Asian, Black, Mixed and a general round the world mode too.
