I don't live in Oregon and even I am hoping this does not pass. If it does, someone over here in Seattle will try to do the same.

Btw, what about people who have to travel long distances for work? Apologies as I only know what was posted here.

Be interesting to see, being that the Democrats are such champions of the little people.

Article mentions WA already setting money aside for a similar program.

In this case, I really hope this does not pass - in Oregon or anywhere else in the country....

Something along these lines is coming. As cars get more efficient and more people adopt electric vehicles the gas tax revenue will continue to go down. The government needs to pay for road maintenance and this is the straw they have grasped onto.

The WA state proposal has an option to pay a set amount based on your odometer, but if you travel out of state you would end up paying more than the nanny state device.

If the future holds such rediculous concepts such as our relinquishing ownership rights to our vehicle purchases, reduced to licensing use for the life of the vehicle along with this new idea of tracking every mile I travel, I'm taking the fucking bus to work until I find a home elsewhere.

There are far less intrusive taxation concepts already in practice. Who would have thought that if they continue to stack taxes on gasoline that people would respond and reduce fuel consumption?

We could always go the model of other countries and states and heavily toll the roads people use for commuting.

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but if we want decent roads we have to pay for them. Just because cars are more fuel efficient doesn't reduce the wear and tear on the roads. So you can pay for it in repairs to your vehicle or taxes to fix the roads, your choice.

Nobody is complaining about a gas tax. I'd be willing to pay more if roads was where it all went. I REFUSE to let the state of Oregon put a nanny in my car. Which means I probably need to plan on moving.

The best way to respond to something like this is when it's in its infancy and you can still effect change. Once it gets established it's much harder to get rid of.
