I had a baby in January... haven't touched the Arduino since! One day maybe

The skies the limit!!! If you've got time you can do anything you can think up! Sensors are relatively cheap too, I have 6 accelerometers, a distance sensor and an LCD screen just hanging out collecting dust.. and probably only have $100 in it TOTAL including the Aruidno Mega board (chinese rip off from Amazon).

Got a link to the distance sensor you have?

This is the one that I purchased - [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BJTRGQW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1"]Amazon[/ame]

I didn't get it to read very accurate yet, but I was also using other routines to try and get it to work. I didn't spend the time to create my own specifically for it.. The goal was going to be to un-solder it from the board and re-locate it to my front bumper so I could stop hitting parking blocks! I don't know why, but I have a hard time figuring out how long the front of this car is!

Might be worth trying to use one from an OEM front bumper or blind spot sensor. Like [ame="http://www.amazon.com/15239247-Sensor-Assist-backup-object/dp/B00SO4K0AY/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1428608447&sr= 1-4&keywords=oem+backup+sensor"]this[/ame] or something similar.

Cool. Lots of potential applications for that kind of thing.

I'm hoping to find a sensor that has a very low (preferably less that 10mm) minimum detection range. Hard to find one that doesn't cost more than what I'm willing to spend on an experiment.

You're absolutely right! I didn't find much that would detect less than an inch and if you wanted it accurate its $$$$.

You should let us know how this progresses!
Yes, I'm using an Arduino Mega and a CAN shield. It will also integrate a 10hz venus GPS and 3-axis accelerometer (i may switch to an IMU later).

I am currently a grad student in Computer Science and doing this project for an embedded systems course that I am taking. I plan to open source it after the class is finished in June.

I would like to integrate a tire temp array over each wheel and a cheap shock velocity sensor for the first iteration.

We should have a website up in a couple weeks to track progress and I will post the link since it seems there is some interest.

I will be hosting the source code at GitHub and once a demo is available it will be available in Zip format. The hope is that the data acquisition system is fully featured and low cost, but easy enough for a technically inclined (e.g. can do their own oil change) person to put together and use without much hassle.
