Thoughts on XXR Wheels?

I asked this on the wheel directory on a specific wheel page so I doubt it'll get answered..thus I'm asking it here.

I've never had XXR's but the price is super tempting and I like the looks of the XXR 530's. I've heard horror stories of cracking and falling apart while driving at high and low speeds. Anyone have good AND bad experiences to share?

I DD my BRZ and haven't tracked it at all. I do some spirited driving but nothing over the top. The roads here are pretty bad in some areas. I can avoid the large potholes pretty easily, but avoiding a huge one sometimes means hitting smaller ones and I'm worried the XXRs might not hold up.

A lot of people bash XXR, Rota, and other knock off wheels. Personally, I've had no experience with them. And I don't think I would ever purchase a set of XXR. But that's because I just don't like their designs/weight. I'm not one to spend $3k on a set of wheels either. I'm sure they will do just fine as DD.

You get what you pay for in most cases though IMO.

they are fine if you are okay with companies taking other people's designs and producing a product with lower quality...
I used to buy replica wheels until I realized you can often buy a lightly used set of authentic wheels for almost the same price.
TLDR?: they will be fine for your use, and they will probably be a bit heavy

First and foremost, do you have a budget?

When it comes to wheels you usually get what you pay for; the XXR's are a great cast wheel that you can throw on your car without worrying much. I seriously doubt they'll disintegrate when you hit potholes, and they're cheap enough that you can replace them if they're damaged without breaking too big of a sweat.

With that said, they're really heavy and the paint on them don't seem to last very long. I was in a similar boat and bought a set of RPF1's because I knew they'd last longer and they were significantly lighter.

"Fake" wheels have a place in the market along with the Authentic ones. Rota and XXR wheels are built pretty well.

There's also no moral obligation; its not the consumer's problem that a competitor is creating a product that looks like their own.

I don't necessarily have a budget, but I'd prefer to spend less so I can buy other things. Plus I just bought a house so I'm sure I'll be throwing money into that.

Thanks for the input.

Well I just bought some fake XXR 530's, actually came in the mail yesterday. Sure hope they don't follow apart in a week lol. I've had replicas in the past and have never had any trouble. With the exception of a cheap replica ADR rim that was on my old 300zx. One cracked when I hit a large pot hole, but was also 9 years old at the time.

What I've read about XXRs for the 86 over the years is this:

1. They're not really heavy in comparison to other cast wheels.
2. They're strong enough for daily driver road use
3. The paint has chipped with certain colors and models
4. The offsets and widths tend to look nice on the car e.g. 17x8.25 et35
5. The price is low in the U.S.
6. They tend to have dual drilled stud patterns, but some have gotten single drilled by contacting their vendor directly.
7. There are very few true "original" designs these days with wheels. People sometimes think they know an original wheel designer/mfg, but that ends up being a knock-off too. This is a very deep hole with little objectivity in the argument. Do what you like with it.

Knock off wheels should be fine for normal DD and spirited driving. I just got a set of Rota Titans seem to be well made and are actually pretty light at 17 lbs. Theirs a lot of people running XXR's I have not seen any failures.

As long as you don't hit a pot hole hard, you would be ok

there's plenty of guys that drift on XXR and Rota's, the nice thing is that if you damage one its a lot cheaper to replace. however the cheaper you pay the heavier it gets.

perfect example is xxr 527 vs rota titans vs weds tc05n in a 17x9. all have the same design and similar offsets and they weight 22lbs vs 17.9lbs vs 14/15 lbs respectively.

Not this argument again...

Every single big name wheel company has copied someone else at least once. This is all common knowledge and happens all the time.

replica =/= fake

Actual fake wheels I wouldn't touch as their certifications are obviously bullshit and their quality is completely unknown.

XXR and Rota are both certified (and I know for a fact that Rota is an OEM supplier in the Philippines for Toyota, etc), so I wouldn't have any issues buying from either.

Are they going to be heavier than an equivalent forged wheel? Of course, but even forged wheels crack/break and are far more expensive to replace if that happens.

I've been daily-ing mine for the past year almost in the DC metro area. I've hit some pretty nasty stuff and haven't had any problems yet. I might live under a rock, but I actually haven't heard too much about quality of the wheels. Most of the issues I've read about here on the forums were due to color, specifically, the chromium black.
