The CX3 is hideous? That's a very uncommon opinion but opinion nonetheless. The new look of Mazda has generally been very well received. The point is that the micro-suv thing is going to be a big market that is currently only filled by Nissan Juke which is arguably the ugliest vehicle ever made.

As for the hideous hot-rod-hearse thing, what company created this monstrosity that you speak of? Your description makes me think of a PT Cruiser.

He could be talking about the Chevrolet SSR. Aborted hot rod/ute looking thing that was supposed to be all the rage but ended up falling flat.

It should be called the Chevrolet facepalm.

Yes, PT Cruiser. Couldn't for the life of me remember the name when I was typing earlier. Now, most of Mazda's other stuff I think looks fine (Mazda 3 or 5) or even sexy (RX-7's).

The Mazda 2 for example I like the look of for what it is, too. I also like the look of the CX-5 (which I think is actually better than the Forester, which was my first Subie), but that CX-3.... yeah, do not like.

Has their decades of bland lineup finally leached all imagination out of their designers? What happened to the company that decided on a whim to enter Formula 1? Or any number of other racing series they've participated in? Now they can't even make a Corolla without outside help.
Japanese business is sometimes hard to understand from an outside perspective. While I agree with what you're saying, there is a reason Toyota is making these decisions. They see outcomes in the long term, so whatever it is to include Mazda, it's not far from collaborating with Subaru and BMW. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Toyota merge or buyout portions of big nameplates in the future, or own the rights to something others will use. In the partnering with Mazda/Subaru they are helping to improve their country role in automotive manufacturing, which they still dominate, and will make sure they do.

Toyota is watching the VW group closely, and are not about to hand the torch.

No real point in having a license if you don't have a car Electronic age and the kids don't really go anywhere, it's weird.

See, and I like the way it looks. Though I'm anti-SUV in general.

I like the Juke a lot. Hell, I was cross shopping one, but the fact you can't get AWD with a stick is idiotic and killed the car for me. Kia Soul currently dominates that market though (and is the only one I actually really like).

On the PT Cruiser, it was cool...at the time. Then they made the damn thing for ten years without a redesign. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is that the same guy that designed the PT Cruiser then went to work for Chevy and made the HHR. Same crap, different brand, and way too late to sell well.

- Originally had a shit engine
- Way too damn heavy
- Way too damn expensive

If it had been affordable and had come with the LS motor from the get-go, it would have been great.

Doubt VW will ever come to beat Toyota at this point. VW's quality has gone way down to compete, repair costs are still high (like anything else German), and their resale is crap. Germans need to learn the KISS principal when it comes to engineering...

Just for the record I dislike VW almost as much as Chrysler.

Ahahahaha! I'm still laughing at the slow realizations that it is in fact, just a rebadged Mazda2. This was rumored awhile ago, BTW.

As for the pretentious responses to Mazda, meh. They could almost be confused for sporting if they had more power. I've heard the 2.5L Skyactiv in the Mazda3 is nice but the Mazda6 and Mazda2 don't have nearly enough power to be "sporty."

The "hip" crowd care about fashion and accessories. They probably won't be buying brand new cars off the lot.

Only frugal/practical people and parents buying first cars for their children will be buying entry level cars like the iA, therein which they will probably look at safety ratings, fuel economy, and creature comforts. Styling probably doesn't matter too much.. boring may be better to them because it means less attention = less tickets.

He has been looking at options and I will pass that onto him.
