This car makes perfect sense. Scion is Toyota's brand for selling low-cost shitbox cars to young people without a whole lot of money with the idea that they'll throw them away in a few years when they can afford to upgrade to a Toyota. In the past their marketing approach involved making those shitboxes look fake sporty or fake edgy, because that's what young poor people want, right?
But they probably did some market research and realized that not all young people want to drive douchey cars. So they're offering a low-cost shitbox for the young people who just need something normal-looking to get back and forth from work. Or it's an alternative for people who have outgrown their older, worn out Scion shitboxes but still can't afford a decent car. Or it's an option for the parents of young people who want to buy their kids practical cars but can't bring themselves to buy one that looks as stupid as most Scions look. This fits the evolution of the Scion brand perfectly. The FR-S really does not fit the brand. I still don't completely understand why that wasn't a Toyota. |

I'm sure it will sell just like any other Toyota/Scion/Mazda. Exterior-wise, the manufacturers could give a fuck. If it sells, they're going that route.

I am not sure what the "hip" crowd wants in a car or even if they really want a car. It seems that the car manufacturers think that they want a connectivity center on wheels. If that is true then it does not matter how ugly the car is as long as it provides a WiFi hot spot for everyone in it or around it to connect to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, etc. God knows, your life will end if you cannot stay connected at all times.

Only because they can't afford them. But yeah, another thread entirely... Also funny is that marketing never gets it right. Most of these small, "funky" cars that are aimed at younger crowds are being sold to older people. |

I believe the majority of xB owners are 40+. I remember at the tC2 launch, they showed the average age of ownership, tC was in the 20s, xD was 20s, and xB was around 34.

I loved my wife's xB2 (I'm not in my 30s quite yet though). I actually thought it drove fine, and there was lots of space. We used it as our mini-SUV for a while when getting moved into Houston. Now that we have two sporty cars, definitely missing that space...
A lot of xBs are sold to individuals who have small businesses for much of the same reason. Except they are hauling tools/materials/supplies/etc. for their small business in a relatively cheap, easy to drive car... So I definitely do believe that stat on the xB. |

Good grief that looks hideous! Way worse than the godawful hearse-looking car (they tried to sell it as a hot-rod throwback and failed completely) whose name I know but I can't for the life of me remember right now.
