He's already done the hardest part! You don't have to split the cases to replace the main seal.

I get what you're saying but how many miles does the engine have? If the seal is still nice and supple.... Meh, either way...

Just because he's done all the hard stuff doesn't mean it'll be easy and fun

It may not be fun, but it is cheap and easy:

$20 - https://www.parksubaruoemparts.com/p...%20MAIN%20SEAL

To remove that kind of seal I drive a nail through it right where you can see the "XXXX" and make a hole. There is metal in there so it takes more force than you would think.
Then I run a drywall screw in the hole, then use that to pull out the old seal.
You can do one on each side.
Use engine oil only to lube the new seal and press it in evenly flush with the case like the old one.

There are tools that help you install it straight but it is essentially a giant washer and a couple bolts to use to push in the seal.

While you are in there see if that center piece is a bushing or bearing that you might want to replace at the same time (that bronze colored section in the middle).
My other car has a pilot needle bearing and a felt washer in there.

That's a keeper of a trick, Stu. I'm going to remember it for sure.

Jeez, transmission isn't even broken in yet. Well, we all learned Stu's cool trick today. That's a big plus. Those seal removal tools suck.

If you're going for it, do NOT drill. Use a good clean nail.

I did try the trick. But I didn't read your instruction correctly.I missed the part where you said that i have to make a hole before i use the screw, and I slightly scratched the outside face of the crank trying to force the screw in with an impact. So i just removed the seal with a flat head screwdriver. But I will try your method next time.

If you don't have the proper tool to install the new oil seal. and you want to install it with your hand and a hammer.
Wipe the inner crankshaft wall and the inner crankcase wall with a clean cloth till its dry. also wipe the outside of the oil seal, and only apply engine oil or grease to the inner ring of the oil seal.

Or this will happen to you all day long.

I bought 2 new oil seals. so this was the first one. and i kept practicing on it till i got it in perfectly. Then i installed the second new oil seal.
