I noticed that there weren't any comments on the AD08's, I'd be interested to know people's opinions on those tires.

I just did some research on this... ADO8 s are supposed to be epic but... they didn't get a tread wear update to 200 so you can't run them? Pretty sure that's how it works

My favorite tire. Great grip. Very consistent. Good tread wear. Reasonably quite on the road.

Tires for summer/autocross/track (reference/research/reviews)

Update: Added cost column without shipping - mostly from tirerack, except Maxxis from their website and Nitto NT01 from discounttiredirect. It's a bit rough since there are special/discounted prices for some tires...those are italicized. I won't updated prices frequently, this is only to have another reference point. If somebody has a resource for MSRP, please share.

Just some anecdotal information from last Monday at WGI. I drove up on my new summer setup that I plan to use for street and track...

Toyo Proxy RA1s 235-40-17 on Machv Awesome 17x9 wheels.

Car was great both on the street and on the track. I could have definitely pushed it harder on track but the blue bushes elude me. Nice audible feedback and plenty of room to catch myself when pushing it.

Temps were 40-45F and it was damp out.

We will see how they do when things get warm out.

Thanks Mike. Mine have been great, shaved and heat cycled when new. They may wear out at Thunderbolt in May (NASA). Will see how Continental slicks and NT01 compare.

Spent Monday and Tuesday at Watkins Glen, mid 40's and 60's respectively. Previously running Continental take-offs but they were dead so I ran BFG R1 (225/45-17). They definitely like higher pressures, 36-38, and I did run my fastest time ever on Tuesday (2:19.7) but they lack a certain feel. In fact I had my first spin at WG ever after 11 years of running there, coming out of the heel, applying power it just snapped around on me, no chance of catching it but I did keep it on the tarmac and off the blue.

Monday was a bit cold for race tires too...

yes it was, tires were barely over 100º on Monday after a full session. That's cold! Maybe they will perform better at NJMP?

This is regarding Autocross-like events:

Semi-Slicks:
Besides the Toyo R888, I also tried the Dunlop Direzza 03G (215/45 17) at a Slalom event (this tire may not be available in the US). I cannot recommend it, as it didn't really warm up. (Granted it was only available in a harder compound.)
The Toyo R888 is comparable to the Yokohama A048. The Yokohama AD08 is slower than those 2.

Slicks:
I was very happy with Michelin 24/61 R17 S5B (Supersoft) at a Slalom-event. They are grippy from the start. (This is about a 245/35 R17 size).
I was also considering the Avon 230/605 R17 (379 or A49 compound), but chose the Michelin instead, because most events were won on that tire last year. (However, I was also told that the Michelin doesn't last/heat-cycle very often).
Yokohamas are also available in a supersoft compound but are apparently no match to the tires above (need more time to warm-up) and neither are the slicks available from Hankook (though less costly).
Based on the information I could gather online, the Avons (and thus Michelins) are superior to the Hoosiers A7 (granted they are also not DOT approved).

EDIT: Here's a link with a photo of the Michelin tire: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=73924&page=2
(I couldn't fit four 245/40 R17 on the rear seat area but I can fit those four 17x9 wheels with slick tires).

Tires for summer/autocross/track (reference/research/reviews)

Got lucky at NJMP Thunderbolt to pick up a set of Toyo RR 235/40-17 with four heat cycles from a racer for cheap...dear God, the grip! First time I tried UTQG 40 slicks...never going back. My shaved and heat cycled (when new) Toyo Proxes RA1s had 30+ heat cycles and had some meat left but limited grip. Fortunately there was a trailer with mounting and balancing equipment at the track so I swapped and ran on them for two 20-min sessions - what a difference. They feel very solid/smooth/comfortable to drive fast but I only pushed them up to ~1.1 G in a few turns - can't wait to drive them again on this track 6/1-6/2. Camber 3.0f/2.5r, resprung and revalved Ohlins R&T. 37 hot pressures felt good but need to research that - suggestions? 17x8 RPF1.

I have the Toyo R888 (245/40 17) at 33 psi in the front and 31 psi in the rear. In the rain I run 205/40 17 (less hydroplaning) and have 36 psi in the front and 32 psi in the rear. It's important to not go too low in the front otherwise these R888 start to shred.

I ran the Michelin slicks at a slalom on Sunday again and now my steering wheel is crooked. A fast chicane in combination with these sticky tires must have shifted the steering rack (the suspension looks fine, the car is not pulling to either side, there's no play or noise in the steering mechanism. And I definitely did not hit anything).

Nitto NT01 in 235/40-17 on 17x9 rims - hot tire pressures? Seems like 38psi hot should be about right. Running -3.0f/-2.5r camber and zero toe. Going to Palmer for the first time next weekend 6/12-14 with PCA, can't wait.

I found 35 to be optimal
