The only way you should even consider a modded car is if you personally have the skill and knowledge to service or repair each and every mod on the car. Otherwise, you had better have deep pockets in case anything goes wrong.

Often with modded cars you are buying someone else's mess. A lot of people mod cars in an effort to make it their vision of the perfect car. When they get it to the point that they no longer like it then they dump it. Every mod compromises some aspect of the stock car. Finding the perfect balance is difficult at best. It is also very subjective. What one person finds acceptable (noise, stiff ride, low ride hieght, increased tire wear, fuel mileage, fuel availability. reduced reliability, loss of warranty. etc.) may be a total turn off for everyone else.

In general, modded cars are also more likely to have been abused and driven hard.

I have bought modded cars but I was very selective, the mods were exactly what I wanted and I have the ability to do all the work on the car myself.
Even with my experience, knowledge and tools, I would never, ever buy a car with a aftermarket force induction system on an internally stock engine that came from the factory with a normally aspirated high compression engine.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you very much everyone for the advice! I think I'm going to just buy a new one and slowly mod it myself. I'm just getting in to the scene so I don't have a lot of knowledge or experience. The 15 I was eyeing at the dealer by my house just got bought this weekend :/ Time to start hunting again. I still have to sell my current vehicle or I would have already snagged it up. Dealers are so ridiculous on trade in price.

I bought a used 2013 BRZ limited last August and have been happy since. Mods on it included a INVIDIA exhaust, aftermarket horns, air-intake (my car cools much quicker than my buddy's AT BRZ), LED internal lights, CUSCO flat red button for E-brake, slotted brake discs, and probably aftermarket brake pads (brakes really fast. Don't know how fast a stock BRZ slows down).

I was going to put most of these mods in eventually, and am glad I bought what I did, although something must be said for modding your car yourself.

NEW. That feeling of brand new car! You start fresh! Dipping into that virgin!

Your car, your mods. Don't buy someone else's headache! I learned my lesson when I bought a "highly modded" IS300.

I am buying a 2016 and starting to buy some stuff now. So far I just purchased a rear spoiler and a few more items. Check my signature for my build

Live with a new stock one for awhile before you mod, you might be surprised.

Hey @Rampage, I've been meaning to ask you, do you have a thread somewhere of your MR2?

Buying new is a wonderful feeling. You're the only owner, you know everything about it.

That said, I'd never buy a new car again.

Get it in writing that it was un-modded. Buy certified, whatever. Save yourself the loss of a new car and buy used, especially if you're planning on modifying it. On top of that, a certified used or good condition private sale will maintain it's value better.

Also, people seem to want to get rid of these on the cheap. You can find a 2013 for under $18k all day.

EDIT: For people saying not to buy someone else's headache, that is easily avoidable.

There is one over on Spyderchat if you are interested. http://www.spyderchat.com/forums/sho...-s-Super-White I didn't do one here.

If we do more mods on my son's FR-S then I will start one for that car on this forum.
