I was actually thinking lately about how I'd gotten rusty with heel toe. Some random part of my brain decided to try it during the test drive of my BRZ and I nailed it just perfectly. Haven't really tried more than a few times since but with a little practice the car is very capable of it on stock pedals. The pedals that turbowned posted are drool worthy though. Those would be cool to have!

If I have clunky shoes on it's harder to heel toe with these pedals. However whenever I drive barefoot, it's really easy

Are the BRZ pedals different than the FR-S? I just did my first really twisty drive in my frs and I was having a hard time heel toe shifting while keeping even brake pressure. I usually us the side of my foot, and if I actually use my heel on the gas, my leg gets all twisted and hits the steering wheel. Maybe I'm just used to my other car still, but I have to come up with some sort of solution, preferably that matches, he other pedals..

I've not had any problems with heel toe in the car.

I actually found it a lot easier, almost intuitive, to heel & toe in my BRZ than any of my previous cars, granted they were a Toyota Tacoma, Honda Civic and a Plymouth Sundace, hehe...

Bump.
Quick question for those who are adept at the hell-toe downshift technique. How far back do you have your drivers seat and how tall are you? I've only been driving stick for a few months now. Heel-toe is next on my list of techniques I want to learn. I'm 5'10 and I drive with my seat all the way back. Is this not ideal for heel and toe? I like having that "laid back" position while driving, always have. I'm not sure if this is the norm among other drivers of this car. At first it was a bit of a stretch to floor the clutch with the seat all the way back. While teaching myself to drive stick I adapted the granny seating position with the steering wheel pretty much over my lap. I found that clutch control was so much easier with the seat back despite the reach. I improved much faster once I realized that. Now that I'm used to it I hate driving with the seat forward. Needless to say, nobody will ever ride in the back. |

If you're 5'10 and you're seat is all the way back, I figure it's probably too far back (granted, your leg length will make a difference).
I notice, you also want to make sure your seat isn't in it's lowest position. When my seat originally was, it was harder to heel toe. You want some "bend" in your legs imo. This also prevents your knee from hitting the wheel during shifting (clutch in/out) and heel toeing. I'm 5'11" (6'0" on a good day with shoes on lol) First manual car. Owned the car since Sept. I got heel toe down pretty quickly - on stock pedals. |

One good thing...
I guess there is just one upside to barely fitting in my frs. I'm 6'3" with huge feet 13-14. I don't even have to heel-toe. I can use the left side of my foot to brake and my foot is wide enough to blip with the right edge, heel never has to leave the floor.

I have a couple of questions as I'm a newb to driving stick: when slowing down and rev matching, can I just slow down with the brakes and then quickly use my right foot to blip the throttle and then switch gears? It seems like it accomplishes the same thing as heel and toe.
Also when downshifting after I change the gears and am slowing down do I have to release the clutch slowly like I do when upshifting or can I just quickly release it? Thanks |

The aim of heel toeing is to keep the car smooth, so if I think I read your question right, you're saying slow down with brake, then take foot off brake and blip throttle? If you do that, when you take foot off brake the weight shifts off the front to the back, then when you down shift and let of the clutch it acts like braking and shifts weight back to the front.
As for speed of clutch release, I think you just need to practice more. Upshifting clutch release is pretty fast for me actually. If you're taking a lot of time between shifts I think your engine revs are dropping too far so when you let out the clutch the engine winds up to try to catch up with the tranny. To keep that smooth it sounds like you're letting clutch out slow to allow slippage and the engine to spin up gradually. Downshifting, if you do the rev matching you can let out the clutch fast too. Give this a shot: given the depth difference between the brake and gas, it's really a more of 'ball of foot' / just above the arch of foot to heel if you really want to get a good portion of the heel on the accelerator.
