BMW's All-New Z4 Serves Up A Better Look Inside, Leaks Engine Data

Quote:
Since the last time our spy photographers spotted BMW's new Z-car in the wild, one BMW exec came out and stated that the roadster is likely to be called the Z4, not Z5.

Either way, what really interests us with these pictures is the cabin. Not only do we get a closer look at the center console, iDrive commands, 6-speed manual gearbox, infotainment screen and steering wheel, but we also spot a model description note on the dash.

Apparently, we're looking at a Z4 s20i, which "smells" like an entry-level model to us, especially since the note mentions its power and torque outputs, rated at 145 kW (197 PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft).

In case you're wondering, that's definitely an upgrade over the old Z4 sDrive20i, only good for 184 PS and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. As for the engine being identified as the B48B20O1, that tells us it's a 2.0-liter four cylinder turbo.

A more powerful version of this engine could make its way into the s30i (or sDrive30i), whereas a turbocharged six cylinder unit should sit underneath the bonnet of a M40i. Rumors of a hybrid model still persist though, utilizing the optional xDrive all-wheel drive system.

According to the note, there's also a start of production (SoP) month we can track, and it's November 2018, though that doesn't mean other, more powerful variants won't be launched before this s20i model. Once the all-new Z4 makes its way into dealerships, it will contend with the likes of the Porsche 718 Boxster, the Audi TT, as well as the Mercedes-Benz SLC.

So....in other words, not a Toyota 6 cylinder, but a BMW 2.0 Turbo'd 4 cylinder.

The next Supra is not looking too good on paper....

i really hope Toyota only offers a 6 cylinder version. i cant see many people lining up for a $50k Supra with only 195hp & 236 lb-ft.

I had a bad feeling when they partnered with BMW that they wouldn't be developing a new engine for the next generation Supra.

Hopefully we are all wrong lol

MotorTrend may be wrong, but they state that the S20i is simply a downrated variant of the motor found in the -30i varient of BMWs in America, which are rated at 248hp and 258tq. BMW claims the auto version of that motor does 0-60 in 5.2 in the 2 series. Meanwhile, the 240i is stated at 4.6 to 60.

Most agree that both motors are underrated.

no you are most likely right, and to be fair thats the only way they can make a business case for a niche product. but this is what i think should be offered for the Toyota. the B58 for the base model with a $55k price tag. than maybe a $65k+ model with the S55.

correct, and yes BMW does unrated their motors. i think the B58 from the M240i would be a great candidate for Toyota's version.

Its probably just a European model. The current Z4 sDrive28i offered more power than that.

Inside the cabin, there’s a sheet taped on the dash that shows some key info, including the Z4 successor’s model code, G29, and the engine found in this prototype, which is the new B48 2.0-liter turbo-four used in everything from the Mini Cooper S Hardtop to the BMW 530i. This particular model features a version, dubbed the “S20i,” rated at around 194 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

For the U.S., however, it’s likely that we’ll receive the 30i variant, which is the same engine rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft in the 230i, 330i, and 530i. In addition to the four-cylinder variant, the Z4 successor should also include a six-cylinder-powered M40i model that may utilize the same 335-hp 3.0-liter turbo I-6 found in the M240i and 540i. Although the prototype we spied featured a six-speed manual transmission, expect the U.S.-spec model to come exclusively with the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. If a row-your-own option does become available in the upcoming Z4 successor, it’ll likely be limited to the base four-cylinder variant.

The version I heard is that BMW rates their engines such that it puts out the appropriate wheel horsepower numbers (15-20% drivetrain loss) in 115F heat in Abu Dhabi after getting everything nice and heat soaked so nobody bitches about the output.

Anytime you test in better conditions than that (so 99% of the time) you'll see more power than is expected. Pretty consistently it seems that the crank horsepower numbers are pretty much bang on what the dyno spits out as wheel horsepower.

335 whp in the Toyota Z5 should be a hoot as long as it's not a >3,400 lb pig. And a piggyback box for <$500 will bump that up a good 30+ hp by cranking up the boost.

Unfortunately, I don't see it being any lighter than 3,300lbs given BMWs trend of vehicles. Luckily, the B58 is pretty tuner friendly already and a simply ECU tune pulls a solid 30-40whp. Add a couple bolt on parts and it would be near the 400whp mark.

Also, BMW is starting to phase out their DCT, meaning we can be pretty confident in saying that the car, between Toyota and BMW, will likely be offered with the ZF 8 speed auto and a 6 speed manual, like many other BMWs on sale right now.
