it looks like a GT-R fighter to me

Whatever it is, I just hope they don't brand it a Scion in North America.

It is a old concept, but I think they maybe able to put it off if they are basing a new Supra on the FT-HS. Even if a new Supra were to be based on it I believe Toyota would heavily updated it. Pretty much like what they did with the LFA. I think the car would look a lot better with a facelift / new front end. A more production ready interior and lastly door mounted mirrors.

Recall the original 2005 LF-A concept VS the 2007 LF-A II concept VS the 2010 production LFA.

Toyota to showcase Supra concept at Detroit

Quote:
Toyota confirms performance concept car for Detroit, could point to next-generation Supra

A replacement for the Toyota Supra could be shown in concept car form at the Detroit motor show in January.

Toyota has confirmed to Autocar that a new performance-based concept will be seen in Detroit, but declined to comment on whether that concept would point towards a new Supra.

The new concept will be designed by Toyota's Calty studio, which has contributed to a number of Lexus, Scion and Toyota designs in the past but has not worked on a Supra project before.

However, a story posted on Autoblog suggests the concept will indeed be Supra-based, and that high-level Toyota officials plan to "shock the world" with a new Supra concept. A production version is likely to follow.

This won't be the first time a Supra replacement has been previewed. In 2007 the manufacturer showed its FT-HS concept at the Detroit motor show. That concept was also designed by Calty, and reportedly featured a 395bhp hybrid powertrain, which allowed the FT-HS to reach 60mph in around four seconds.

I suppose I shouldn't have said I hope it doesn't look like the FT-HS. I don't care if it shares a similar shape, but it's an old design, much like the early LFA concept (which also isn't that great looking imo) versus the radically different production version.

New Supra is coming, but it still does not tell us yet which of both cars, Toyota Supra or Lexus SC has its chassis co-developed with BMW (M?). Do not forget the Lexus RC-F, also heading to detroit with first teaser already on the web.

1 day? I remember arguing that on this forum with oldskooltoys for like half of 2010, lol.

And I don't understand Toyota's strategy here. How do go from a $25k entry level sportscar and jump all the way to a $60K+ hybrid supercar. Where is the bridge the gap sportscar at 35-45k? You have to offer the people who bought a FRS something to move up to when they trade in. Most people who are buying $25k entry level sportscars aren't going to be able to turn around and drop 60 large on a supra but they could stretch and make the payments on a 370Z/V8 Mustang/STi/EVO.

how do we know it will cost $60k+. when the FT-HS was first unveiled Toyota said a production version could cost $45k.

but lets say it will be $60k, thats still a lot cheaper than the GT-R and most likely the upcoming hybrid NSX and R36 (also rumored to go hybrid).

from what i understand the RC/RC-F uses the same platform as the IS/IS-F/GS/Crown.

rumor on CL is that the LF-LC (SC successor) will be built on the next gen 2015 LS platform. the car will be called the Lexus LC and will be a $100k+ car.

the "new Supra" seems likely to be co-developed with BMW.

I do agreed that the front end of the FT-HS is dated and ugly. But I like side profile and interior layout.

I can't wait to see what they have in store for us at Detroit

Back in 2006 Edmunds reported "In spite of the FT-HS being only a concept vehicle, Toyota's desired starting price for such a vehicle is stated to be in the mid $30,000 range."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_FT-HS

So I guess given the rate of inflation $40k price range sounds right.

2013 Scion FR-S: Origins

Back in 2007, Toyota unveiled the FT-HS concept. When I saw it up close, I was struck by its sharp lines and compact, athletic stance. It always seemed to be in the back of my mind.

I see a lot of the FT-HS's underlying form in the FR-S, but the beveled edges have been rounded and smoothed over. I still think the FR-S is an attractive little coupe, but imagine if the FT's lines had survived. Yowzah!
