Nice to know. At least Toyota has their head on straight. I come from a Mitsubishi background but they've lost it. Now the debate is on...should I still get an FRS or wait, save my pennies, and go bold.? :b

I think toyota will be aiming for the GTR as well, I mean what's the point of building a rival that's not true to its past legend.

I honestly think there is no possible way that if they were to re-release a Supra level car that it would be close to the same price that they were when you could buy them new 20 years ago.

Lexus is already making a 100k coupe. Let that compete with the GTR. Then make the Supra 35k.

I could be way off base here, but my 2c:
- From Uchiyamada's comments about not wanting to take sales from the 86, it sounds like the upcoming Supra will be targeting the 370z/Mustang GT segment. Probably will end up in the $35-40k price range. - I doubt Toyota would partner with BMW in making a car that would compete with the 335i, so the price can't be too much higher than that. - Toyota probably wants BMW's expertise in working with turbo I4's (and I6's). I think the Supra gets something like a DI turbo H4 or I6, making 320 hp, dropped into a stretched 86 chassis, weighing about 2900-3000 lbs.

MSRP of a turbocharged Mark IV Supra back in 1998 was right at or above 40k (I don't remember exact number). I agree with the comments that it will have to be at least 35k, but I am personally expecting 40k+ if this actually happens.

As much as I'd love a new Supra, I can comfort myself knowing the twins are much better than the base supra of almost 20 years ago!
However, I hope they can offer a manual version, without flappy paddle...just because. As for competition, the corvette and Nissan Z were mostly it's competitors during that time. The GT-R was just something else altogether. People have a delusion of grandeur, when you think Supra today, you think of a 600-1000 HP monsters. They came stock at 220 HP, and 320 HP NA in their latest iteration. My 0.02$

I am not going guess at what prices that going to put the MKV. But according to sales in USA the supra did very poorly. base models sold between upper 38k-40k and and Beloved TT models sold for 60k brand new. granted there were models inbetween if you consider the TARGAs to be The SS(supersports) models and combining the TT with SS went for more. So working for Toyota some years back. i found that the amount of money lost by not selling them at MSRP. Is what deatured them from bring the MKV out sooner. for example 1993 NA Supra MRSP was 38,875 included limited slip torsen 6changer leather power drivers seat. sold for 23,9450.
So imagine they will be focus on numbers of sells of the FRS because its already proven the market is there. And hopefully the Renowned Rep that it has will carry thru in sales. but that would depend on price. The MKIV is know for its potential power. i mean that because factory power is mildly mentionalbe to today standards (i realize that in the 220hpNA 320hpTT was alot in the 90's). And with upgrades you get monster power. So would you buy it for its potential power its or actual power(stock)? They could sell it over priced because it predecessor (mkiv) with no real power. or beef it up and be over priced like LFA which has power but over valued by lexus? |
