Yes, that was SO amazing!
At that time (2 decades ago), I didn't know how amazing it was.

Report: Toyota Supra Successor May Get 400-HP Turbo 2.5L I-4 Hybrid Powertrain
Supra Successor Could Arrive in 2017, Concept Later This Year
Written by: Peter Lyon on February 11 2013 7:30 AM

The latest speculation from Toyota City about the Toyota Supra successor suggests that the flagship car may be powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 hybrid producing at least 400 hp. Toyota may reveal the Supra production car late in 2017, though we could see a concept version as soon as this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

The recently signed agreement between BMW and Toyota will form the backbone to the development of the Supra successor, a coupe that will be based on the Toyota GT86 platform. One insider informs that the BMW Z4 successor will use a revised version of this platform, as well. While the Supra successor will incorporate a reinforced version of the GT86’s platform to cope with the extra horses, our source tells us that the body will be bigger than the GT86 and feature a design inspired by the FT-HS hybrid concept car that debuted at the 2007 Detroit auto show. A rendering of what a future Toyota Supra successor is shown above; the Toyota FT-HS concept hybrid is pictured at right and below.
Unlike the Scion FR-S’ Subaru-derived boxer 2.0-liter I-4, our source indicates that the most likely engine that will end up propelling the new sports car will be a Toyota-built turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid generating upwards of 400 hp. Even so, a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid remains a possibility.
GT86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada – who also happens to be the head of the Supra successor project – is working to create a concept car for this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, a car with a planned debut of late 2017. As we noted in late November, Tada has admitted that Akio Toyoda has asked him to develop the car “as soon as possible.”
We are told that BMW will help with the suspension settings and handling of the new Toyota. Meanwhile, our source also tells us that BMW, which will also use a beefed up version of the GT86 platform for its Z4 update, is testing a BMW-built V-6 hybrid unit that delivers similar power to the Supra successor.

No its doesn't. The up-coming BMW M3/M4 was and probably yet is tested with a V6 engined derived from one of the V8 engines. Though the engine is technically superior to the I6, BMW ruled out the V6 for cost reasons, so M3/M4 is still getting to 95% the I6 which is not better but cheaper. BMW is all about cost reductions, even if something gets better gets lots.

That part that makes it lose credibility is the "mid-rear" engine placement. That is not possible on the GT86 platform. There are two explanations for this: Either Supra and Z4 are mid-front engined but not hybrids, or it is about the Supra and i4 which are mid-rear engined. But that means the platfrom will not be the ZN6 but the CF BMW chassis, which will be a more sporty and affordable shortend version of the i8. Maybe that car will then be the stand alone M model, and they chose a V6 because it is the only way to fit in a larger engine in a mid-rear transversal platform. But this sounds like BMW is copy-ripping the Honda NSX.

I personally wish both the BMW and Toyota will be mid-front engined, there is so much choice among the mid-rear engined cars.

Well, i for one hope that they use another Iconic platform for the motor... The I6 turbo, or twin turbo... just give us another I6.... please... FR set up... Keep it a supra... With out the I6 and FR layout, then its not a supra...

the i6 is a stupid design to use for contemporary cars. just like the m3 and skyline, the supra has lost its i6. either way, this article says next to nothing. am i the only one who thinks that the supra, z4, and the frs being all the same platform with the potential for front or mid engine placement is far fetched?

In my opinion, the Supra and FR-S should not share the same platform as it would cause Toyota's (and it's subsidiaries') lineups to be slightly redundant.

i think that if they would use that platform it would be modified similar to the relationship between the rx8 and the miata. either way, using a platform made of subaru parts in a toyota that was built in conjunction with bmw sounds like its all speculative at best. i hate how journalism stopped being about reported facts and is now often pure opinion.

That's the history of the Supra, though. It was a Celica Supra first. They put in a fancy 6 cylinder motor, stretched the wheelbase to balance it and voila.

If they put in a performance EZ36 or 2GR, stretch it to keep good F:R balance it would make a suitable homage to the Mk1 and 2.

Plus inexpensive development. (compared to a ground up new platform at least)

A new Supra should just use the same platform as the Lexus GS, IS/RC.
