No, you don't really need it, but it's US NHTSA Federal law now because some people really are that thick.

Let's be clear, because some folks might misunderstand what that means. Federal law requires that new cars come with TPMS installed. Federal law does NOT require the owner of the car to continue using it. You can take them out if you want.
