Does anyone else have a scratching and whistling sound from the tranny only when cold?

I wouldn't say scratching but I like the cold whine.

Same as always, just know how to avoid it on the street now, don't redline it in 3rd, but I have a trackday at Big Willow on April 12th, and it will be necessary to drive it like it like I stole it

I just stumbled across the thread. Remember, it will be a brand new transmission and will take another 5000-8000 miles to break in, or one day at Big Willow.

You know, ever since I bought a 96 cherokee 5 speed as a daily driver, my brz's transmission feels much better.

My BRZ grinds every now and then (once a week or so) when shifting from 3rd to 4th, it hasnt happened often enough to where I can predict it

The tolerances are tight with the AZ6. There is no mechanical fix for the 2nd gear crunch, the fix is your technique. Go slower when it's cold. Synthetic oils can make it a bit easier, but you have to slow yourself down. I've owned a 6-speed Miata, RX-8, and two 86 twins, all with some version of the AZ6, and all of them were tight going into 2nd when cold.

I'm pretty hard on this gearbox so it's hard to commit to either poll but I'll share my experience. First off dump the factory gearbox fluid after break-in. I had a lot of metal (looked like mud) stuck to the magnetic drain plug. The "snick" into gear and any difficult cold shift wentry away with Red Line Lightweight shockproof (can't remember if I cut it in a 1/2 at the time). I had poor results with Motul Gear 300 on our STI race car (broke down in one one race) so I skipped right to what was proven for us. I eventually broke 4th gear at 400 whp and 325 slicks.

Now on the new box we added an oil cooler, pump, and filled with 1/2 lightweight shockproof and MT90 (I would have gone straight shockproof but there is some concern when running a pump). With the cooler the box was handling the power where it broke 4th gear before. I do get the sense that the gear teeth are stretched (sharp) as it can snick into 4th now. The interesting thing is that when I turn the pump and cooler on, it instantly stops the snick into 4th.

I'm starting to think the reason 4th breaks is due to a lack of lubrication and heat. I suspect the oil fill hole we use to pump the cooled oil back into the transmission might be pumping onto 4th gear. It's something to think about at least.

My car is on it's second transmission (first replaced around 10k miles under warranty for grinding). New one still isn't 100% right. My dad's is completely different: light, easy to shift, glides right into gear. The difference is frustrating.

I waited until warm weather arrived to see if my transmission 2nd gear crunch improved. It has.

Below about 50 F I get the second gear crunch consistently. Now that it's warm it almost never happens. I've only got 3000 miles on my '14 BRZ so I'll let it keep on breaking in.
