I got the auto because it was cheaper at the time and I didn't want to wait longer for a manual. Auto is still fun and can still drift

More people than you think... The same who complain about not being able to get said times on the forums and immediately want to add more power after taking the car home.

And there's another one..

For me, it's a good thing my wife loves driving the GTI and has basically claimed it as her's. Otherwise I would have taken a big loss trading it in.

If you're used to driving manual and enjoy it, think hard before getting an auto for your fun/sporty car. If you get bored of it (as many do), it can be an expensive lesson.

But if you're used to driving auto, then you'd be fine going either way. If you want a bit of a challenge, buy the manual. If you want more of the same, get the auto.

I miss my MKV with the DSG sometimes. Definitely the best auto I've dealt with, but as fun as it was, especially doing laps around the Nordschleife, nothing beats driving a manual again. (I'll admit I do miss putting it in drive and being lazy sometimes, though.)

I'm getting an auto because I stalled 3 times at the dealer lot trying to test drive one with the manual before I could even get out. I said to myself: "I can't see myself doing this all the time, especially with the commute I have to do Monday-Friday."

It's call practice. You aren't going to learn how to drive stick in an hour.

Glad I got it only because of my stop and go 24 mile each way commute everyday. I'm sure I woulda been happier with the manual if this was not the case.

I bought this car because I wanted something engaging to drive, to me, the auto doesn't provide the same level of involvement and connectivity to the driving experience as a manual does. For that reason I'd get a manual in just about any car i'd consider buying. So get a stick and have more fun.

When I bought my first car it was a Jetta GLS 1.8T, manual. The only practice I had up to that point was driving my friends old beat up ford bronco around a parking lot. You could put that thing into gear without even using the clutch so it was a poor choice to practice on, but that's what I had and I'm thank full my friend let me use it.

Anyways for whatever reason test drive went pretty good. Next day I go pick the car up. As I exit the dealer there is a street light thats on an incline....

Took me 3 lights worth of stalling before I was able to take off. People were pissed!!!

Not sure about all the "more fun" statements. Sure if you are relatively new to stick it can be fun. I have been driving stick for 40 years and now shifting just sort of happens all on it's own. I don't think about, notice or enjoy shifting because I don't even realize I am doing it any more then I do steering or stepping on the brakes.
The reason I even still drive stick is I like the level of control better. I don't let my car decide when to steer or brake why let it decide when to shift?

the car doesn't really get to "Decide when to shift" in a auto in manual mode though... so not sure about that argument.

But I get what you're saying.. you get more of sense of control in a stick shift, you are 100% in control of the transmission

Ya there is the "manual" control but even then you can only go up or down one gear at a time so not as manual as it would seem. I actually did even consider a AT but could not bring myself to change this late in life!
