Far as I can tell, the new Golf uses the same DQ250 transmission, which should mean the same issues.

I just went with the WRX...I'm far from a "flat brimmer" but I'm not worried about the stereotypes. I wanted the 4door practicality and around town power more...I'll miss the FRS at autocross and mountain passes, but thats about it.

I really like the GTI, but aside from the cost of entry, you really need to look at resale. A 4 year old base GTI books about 4k less than a 4 year old base WRX. I can't promise that will hold to 2020, but I'm willing to bet it will. When you look at the actual sale prices people are asking - the delta gets even bigger. So probably factor that the GTI is another ~$80 a month in depreciation cost, even if the initial cost is the same.

For me, considering its wet more than half the time, no point in having the power if you can't put it down. Even with the PP diff the GTI, its is going to be not much as much fun in the wet.

Golf R looks interesting, but I think it a better comparison to the WRX limited than STI - so for the money it seems a bit underwhelming. IMO the only thing worth paying for on the STI is those diffs and the brembos. I could have been tempted if it wasn't the old EJ in there.

I should also mention that it might be a good idea to bite now - under invoice is possible at year end

Good inputs. if I can just let go of the outer appearance and look at the inside more, the decision will be easy.. I'm not sire if it will hold value better, with the unpopular appearance. I've already seen the 2015 sti used priced lower than a 2014 sti hatch.

Also, even dads wear flat brims now. its the snap back backwards now!

Just buck up and and get a fucking M3 and be done with it. Then, and only then, will you not ever look back wishing you wouldn't have made a bad choice. Looks good, check. Plenty of power, check. Aftermarket parts too expensive to justify, check. See... all the boxes would be checked.

I dig the way a car looks and performs and IMO the Golf and STi are not very strong in the visual department. They may perform good but you'll never see the people on sidewalks taking pictures of you as you drive by in one of those no matter what you do to them. Happens all the time in the 86 and I don't care who you are, that feels damn good. All you need to do to an M3 is wrap it and peoples jaws drop. So I say if you must change, buy and M3... and then let me borrow it

I knew I'd catch flak for the flat brim comment

IMO the WRX has always been homely, but somehow I like the character of every single model year. I even like the '15 look more than the last gen - its all subjective. I certainly like the 15 stock chassis/handling/engine more.

I think the depreciation is mostly driven by the selling points of the respective cars. All of the trimmings that make a GTI more attractive as a new car have sort of worn away when no longer new - the previously nice interior and questionable reliability are all that is left...whereas the utilitarian Subaru is still mostly the same but without the modification warranty guilt.

I really wanted an S3. I think its a prettier, nicer, faster WRX...but I couldn't stomach the ~5k a year in depreciation. I may revisit it as a CPO someday.

The most questionable part of the WRX for me was buying a first model year after a major overhaul...Subaru isn't one for getting things completely right the first time - or really at all.

Performance wise I tend to agree but I still think the M3 is boring to look at.

Even with the M3 more people will stop and look as a base 86 (let alone a lowered one with nice wheels) than the M3.

The only people that ever stop to look at my wife's Golf R are the "golf people". But heaps stop to look at my 86 as you say.

That's what I like though and is the reason I didn't get the S3 or A45 AMG. Too showy for me and my wife.

there's some talk that the focus rs will be offered in a 2 door variation only. I for one hope the talk is malarky and they offer up a 4 door version.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned. Lots of good info to read thru. But how about the new evo that's gonna be coming out. Mitsubishi is saying its their final one. It's a sedan and its going to be shy of 500hp

No such car is coming. There is a final edition of the evo x planned. After that, nothing. If the evo wasn't such a bad car, I might actually get one. It is, however, built poorly. Good fun. Bad car.

Focus ST is in the US but the new GTI is largely superior. At least the ST can be had cheaply, but the Fiesta ST is the superior Ford.

I traded my 2013 6 speed manual Golf R for my 2014 BRZ Ltd. I had a 5 door with Nav/sunroof. Adaptive HIDs, headlight washers, dual zone climate, leather, bluetooth, power heated seats. For practicality, there is no comparison between the two. Seats 4 easily. 5 in a pinch. Great for long trips, and pretty good on gas. Huge hatch to swallow up most items a couple with a child would carry. Inside the cabin is Audi like without the wood accents. Quiet, comfortable, solid and fast. Loved it, but realized that I did not really need to seat more than 2 people and longed for a 2 seater sports car. A Cayman S is more than I'm willing to spend, and we have had good experiences with Subaru (2010 Forester XT's, and currently 2013 Outback Ltd.).

If you like the R, and your wife is okay with it go for it if you don't mind DSG. BTW, if you married the right woman, that relationship is more important than any car.

Also if you married the right woman, the woman will want the guy to have the car he really wants, and he same for her. And if that means 2 sports cars then a 3rd family car may need to be in the family.

How long have you been married? How many times? Not being "cheeky", just asking.

The OP said "I am not a single dousche any more and spending 20k on my car is unacceptable."

If he characterizes himself this way, he obviously values something more than his material desires. I'm just saying material things should be secondary to a marriage relationship.
