I have both. Here's my comparison http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78034

Got to take the Golf R around track again last weekend. Wife got it up to 197kph on the straights (not that long) and lots of fun.

For our "family car" with two kids aged 7 and 9 I couldn't be happier. We got leather so easier to keep back seat clean.

My Toyota 86 is my daily driver and the Golf R is my wife's daily to drop kids at school etc but is also a lot of fun. Best of both worlds. And, you can take the Golf R to track and lap quicker than the 86/FRS if they are both stock. The R for Race mode puts a smile on my face!

And, it is like a wolf in sheep's clothing as only those that know about cars know it has 300HP and 0-100kph in 4.9s. Love when at lights and a boy racer is beside me in their vtec Honda or their V8 Holden.

The GTI is 95% of the Golf R for a lot less money. Coupes suck with baby seats. They're OK with kids who can buckle themselves, but that's around age 5 or 6 for most kids. Sadly, most of the fun cars are coupes.

I had the same dilemma. I prefer stick but with it being the family car for dropping kids at school etc I went with DSG. The stick is quite rare as the DSG is very good from what I have read in the Mk7. The DSG box can change gears far slicker than I can.

I also wanted to own a car that could go 0-100 in less than 5s. The DSG is rated at 4.9s while the six speed stick is rated at 5.1s and in tests the DSG went as low as 4.8s in stock form.

I have had the Golf R on track twice now and the DSG is just as much fun as it is more about the fun on the straights than the corners like the 86/FRS.

If price is an issue most write-ups are the GTI with performance pack is just as good and some think even better. But, I wanted a sub 5s car so went the Golf R.

I had the DSG on my MKVI and it was fan-f'ing-tastic! If the MKVII-R is as good or better, go with it.

The dsg is the same from the mk6 I believe. the manual won't arrive until summer of '15. I was looking at the autobhn edition GTI and the looked good too. price wise, I want to stay under 40k for a DD/family car.

I also saw a awd A4 Avant, but I have a feeling audi is going to have a model change soon..

Now I need to figure out if I should part out my car and put it back to stock, or sell it as a complete car. I noticed PRE is selling their shop turbo BRZ at Silverline for $27k.
Honestly, as a married guy if my wife pulled that move i'd call her selfish. She's being selfish to criticize you for spending your money on your hobby (the car) while all the bills are taken care of and then turning around and telling you she wants a bigger diamond.

Its not like she needs a bigger diamond, that diamond isn't going to put food on the table, drive you to work or change the kids diapers. Now this doesn't mean it may not be a bad idea to trade the brz in for something more family friendly, but getting rid of the car to buy her a bigger rock is asinine.

of course if she's the primary bread winner than my argument is invalid.

This. My MK6 TDI has it and it's excellent

I was about to say the same. I just imagined my girlfriend saying something along these lines...man she'd get an earful. Yeah I know she's a girlfriend, not a wife, but in my future family I'll spend money on what I want as long as I take care of the bills/mortgage/groceries and whatever else.

This bigger diamond thing is getting me mad over the intenets

DSG is a reliability problem if you're keeping the car over 50k miles. If you're just using it for a year or three, go for it. Otherwise, I'd go stick.

Not the current generation I hear. Technology can improve over time eh.

The current DSG comes with a five year specific warranty here so I assume that's a worldwide thing for cars supplied by VW dealers.

From VW warranty info:
DSG Gearbox Warranty

This DSG Gearbox warranty (“the DSG Warranty”) provides 5 year/150,000km (whichever comes first) coverage from the Warranty Commencementdate* for DSG defects** within the original DSG Gearbox of Qualifying Vehicles***.
