Okay, quick update. It was a RAV4 that hit me, not the Hyundai. My gin drinking state last night had me questioning myself. The RAV4 has not returned, checked up until 1:30AM. Went to the office to reexamine the footage to double check. Car has the rear tire attached to the back door.

The office admits that there is a RAV4 owner, but would not give me his or her contact information. They said they'd be happy to contact them for me. I told them not yet, I'm waiting on their car to show up so I can photograph it. I hope today they'll return at some point. I'll be waiting...

I was afraid that the Rav4 might have already gone to a shop for repairs, maybe a shop he has friends at. He may have come back in a different car.

P.S.: If I had gotten in an accident and had the intention to act innocent, this is what I would have done.

Shit just got real.

RAV4 returns today. I was really afraid that this could be...it appears the guy who hit me is one of the detective cops that lives in the lofts. F%$K ME, police security sticker with permit # on front lower right side of windshield to get to work.

Carefully examined his front right bumper @ 25" height. Nothing significant, no red paint. Then again, my paint was chipped off and just a small streak of white left from him.

I left him a polite note explaining what happened, mentioned that the quotes for the damage are considerable, and I'm willing to contribute if necessary. Lets see what happens when you extend an olive branch to a pig....

Good luck. Hopefully as he is a cop, he'll pay up.

I'm sorry for your loss.
In California cops are not liable for damages.
Even if they intentionally damage your car in front of your eyes, no proof(video)= no evidence. Even if damaged bumpers/colors match up,, no video= no proof= no evidence= no case.
You can pray that he is an outstanding guy, but he already left the scene the first time.

I would also recommend having the office make and hold a copy of the incident. Just in case their tapes/drives/media get overwritten sooner than you expect this to be settled.

also, in general. People feel bad to messing up your stuff and if they did not realize damage at the time they usually are apologetic...might not cut you the whole check...but apologetic.

Good luck, keep us updated.

This is the same for everybody...not just the Police.

OP, even if he denies it and refuses to help you out these sorts of things happen. It's just an unfortunate fact of life. Might just have to move on and let it go.

Update?

Well, he's gone. I can only assume he got argumentative with the cop, who promptly shot him, or choked him to death.
