I used a DA where I could from 320 to 600 and finished up the tighter spots by hand. I used abrasive buffing wheels on my rotary tool up to 800 for the nooks and crannies. Took it to 1500 from 800 by hand only.

I didn't want little chunks of the polishing bars making their way into the alternator openings so my final polish was ONLY with Mother's metal polish. I went over each section 4 times...3 with felt wheels and one with a loose cotton wheel. I only used large buffing wheels on the center strip area that I ended up painting red. I used the white and red bars from my Harbor Freight polishing kits. It was easy to get to and the surface was uniform. I covered the alternator openings with blue tape.

The paint is Metal Cast Anodized Red from Dupli-Color...I sprayed it directly over polished metal. During this process, I used 91% alcohol to clean the strip in preparation for paint.

That about covers the process for the alternator. For most other less irregular surfaces...I use buffing bars after sanding then finish with a metal polish.

Thank you for the detailed response! Do you have any idea how many hours went into it? I was thinking that you had to take it apart to get it polished this well. There's lots of nooks and crannies.

I did not take it apart...that's why I only sanded it then used Mother's Metal Polish...the polishing bars will shoot off bits and pieces here and there that could get trapped inside the alternator housing.

I vacuumed and blew out any sanding dust that I created.

I finally painted the engine but I still need to paint the oil pan black.

I primered, painted aluminum, and gloss cleared the engine using Dupli-Color high heat engine enamel line of paints. I degreased engine surface prior to paint with Spray Nine.

I need to order a bunch of seals, o-rings, etc. Also, I did install my Fumoto valve on the oil pan.

I will be doing some more polishing and painting of engine parts...those pics will follow soon.

Project turned out pretty good...I can't wait to start putting everything back together!

Here I've mocked up my red aluminum intake manifold, polished throttle body, polished fuel rails, polished coolant x-over pipe and painted and cleared engine. Next up is polishing the alternator cradle and the A/C compressor. I will also be painting the direct injector fuel rails anodized red.

I will be ordering a bunch of seals and o-rings for the installation of all the removed components...after those are installed I will put together the engine minus the red intake manifold. I'll wait until the engine is back in the car for that because I don't want to scratch it up with the engine hoist chains.

Also, I previously primered the oil pan when I primered the engine, the last pic shows the final results.

I will be building another rolling table with mounts that mate up with the engine. I need to get the engine off the stand in order to work on the Exedy clutch and flywheel.

Here are a few pics of some components temp installed. I'll reinstall the alternator and intake manifold once the engine is back in the RS1 to avoid damage from joist chains. Verus cam plate is installed and torqued.

I will start installing all the brackets and such that don't require o-rings and seals. I still need to clear coat 3 polished pulleys then clean and paint the tensioner pulley gloss black. Also, I will be installing the painted Verus fuel rail covers.

Can't do nice wheels any justice without a big brake kit peeking through the spokes!

A/C Compressor is polished...I'll post pics soon.

Also, I just received a bunch of seals, o-rings, grommets, nuts and bolts, etc. for the build. I hope to have the engine put together by the end of the weekend.

Next up will be building an engine stand that allows me access to the clutch and flywheel.

After that is complete, I will tackle the transmission. I have a Cusco reinforced clutch fork and pivot to install along with a new OEM throwout bearing and other bits. I will be prepping the transmission for paint just like the engine.

Haha yup. It’s the extra brakes they install on his 86. Probably a more common bbk in Japan
