I came from a 2008 300whp sti (400 torque at 3000rpm). I also drove a 2009 TL and a Mazda 2. The brz feels sluggish in most situations. It's slow as hell off the line unless you are really in the mood to hoon it. It feels slow around town unless you are really beating on it. It's very similar to the Mazda 2 in how it accelerates around town. The throttle response is amazing but the car feels very slow when you aren't beating on it.

Now the handling capabilities are damn near telepathic and it has the best manual I've ever driven. But yes, it does feel very sluggish in general. Makes a lot of noise and doesn't go very fast unless you are legitimately beating on it. This is what defines sluggish IMO.

Ive experienced 3 different four bangers, can anyone suggest which one it would possibly be closest to in terms of feel?

I test drove a 2011 Scion tC once, a 2.5L Automatic 180hp/175lb/ft. That was a lazy motor. It pulled linearly but was not fun. I dont think the auto tranny helped.

My dad's Altima has a 2.5L 180hp motor (i think torque's around the same) with Automatic. Thing pulls hard after 4000rpm or so. Made a sound there that made me think i was equipped with some kind of valve lift system. Searched around and it apparently doesnt have one. Possibly just gets loud after a certain RPM. I dunno, but it had good pickup and pull. Definately had more character than the Camry motor.

MY Corolla XRS's 2zz-ge 170hp, 1.8L with 127lb/ft torque. Celica GTS motor, Lotus Elise motor. Needs no introduction. Torqueless wonder, revs to 8400rpm, valve lift kicks in at a relativel high 6800RPM but you feel it. And with the intake you hear it too. Love this motor to death.

Im going to go out on a limb and say the FA20 would feel close in character to the 2.5L in the altima. I hope to nuts it doesnt feel like the Camry motor lol.

My old car was an '07 Subaru Legacy non-GT. I picked up my new car (2011 BMW 135i) on Friday. The difference is seriously mind blowing having never driven a fast car before.

Feeling of speed is highly relative to experience. Having driven a 1990 Cavalier for many years before switching to a 1995 155hp Nissan 240sx that Nissan felt like a bullet. However, once I drove the Evo VIII perspective changed again. Now going back and driving a Civic LX can be underwhelming.

Sluggish is the Cavalier. Push pedal to the metal and watch as the Semis cruise past you up a hill. I feel sluggish in cars where I push gas and the only reaction is noise of the motor wheezing.

Sluggish? Hell no! It just isn't fast. I drove the FR-S a few days ago, it is fine.

Unless you're used to gigantic 600HP V8's you're good.
