When I first started out in my car especially before my commute started, I got like 12 mpg. Now I alternate between over 30 for long freeway drives and abysmally low for long uphill mountain drives depending on my destination.

If your MPG changes by over 50% despite no change in traffic or driving habits not for a single drive but over many, many averaged drives, then take that to the dealer.

Otherwise, there's so many factors that go into MPG that have nothing to do with your engine specifically (traffic, you, temperature, road conditions, passengers, cargo, etc.) that you're picking one possible factor out of a whole host.

since new..28 around town (short drives of 5-10 miles) and 42 on long trips (going 65-70 mph) to South Carolina. Make sure you are using 93 octane gas. (the cars are tune to give best performance and MPG on premium fuel)

Good to hear it helped! Over 50,000 miles, I've averaged over 32MPG (full log is in my owner's journal (see signature). It's a couple of tanks behind and I need to catch it up.

Most of my driving is mixed but little of it is pure city driving. I wish the FR-S had an average speed indicator as that helps tell you more about what kind of pure mileage you are getting. By my estimate though my average speed on a normal basis is about 40MPH for a tank.
