You wanna be legal and run a catalytic converter? I'm pretty sure you don't wanna run it so you have a red glowing light behind you (which the cat is at operating temperature).


And what's performance related - I'd guess it's simple physics. By the time the exhaust gas reaches the cat at the end of the pipe, it loses a lot of it's temperature and it's velocity meaning the further you move the obstacle away, the less backpressure you have on the engine hence improving performance and reducing temperatures.

The cats get glowing hot mainly from a chemical reaction if I'm not mistaken.

I've never seen a cat so far back in the exhaust that the glow could be seen from behind.
