I'm going to change it at 1000mi then at 4000 and every 4000 after that to keep things easy. This car won't be driven too hard, but I'm not a fan of the new longer OCIs manufacturers are recommending; especially when coupled with such lightweight oil.

One thing to note about that on Subaru's, is the "severe duty" 3750 recommendation basically includes most types of drivers. Either by where you live, or the type of driving you do.

Draco, I'm also going to do a change at 1k, but want to figure out what kind of oil to use on that first change. Don't these engines not come with synthetic from the factory, but then require it afterward?

It's a huge debate about what they come with. But the requirement is for a 0W-20 which only comes in Synthetic. I'll be using Penzoil Platinum as it has a good following at BobIsTheOilGuy.com. The best would be Amsoil or RedLine. I would recommend against Mobil 1 as Subaru engines seem to like drinking it.

I let my inner ricer out to play today. I got rid of the junk tips and replaced them. I didn't let him go too crazy and kept him to 3.75" tips.

Tip removal thread here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7275

They are simple DC Sports EX-1011 tips. They aren't much wider than stock, but their shape fills out the cutouts a bit better.

I noticed the same thing. At 12 miles, it felt really laggy, and was actually annoying. Now that I've put a bit more mileage on, the response is definitely more immediate.

If it's the same as my STI, it'll be like that whenever you reset the ECU.

Did not know 0-20 only comes in synth. Thanks.

On my STI RedLine kept my internals looking literally brand new. BUT I have heard it can show a bit more bearing wear and I did have bearing problems in that car :/ When they stripped my engine down it looked like it had like 5k miles on it, it was so clean. Bearing issues were also most likely caused by a very bad driving situation, where I was forced to lug my engine for an hour up a mountain pass at a speed slower than idle in 1st gear. Semi trucks can move slower than walking speed and I had no where to get off the road. Next day I had rod knock

Definitely agree on Mobile 1.

Been thinking about trying amsoil

So, a couple days and 130 miles of living with this car so far. It gets better and better the more in sync I get with it. You really need to be involved with the engine, it's RPMs, and your gears to really make it sing. But when you do, it is a rather torquey-feeling engine. The big problem I'm finding is that , coming from a turbo car, I unconciously keep it in the 3.5K-4.5K range when accelerating. That's the sweet spot for a turbo EJ, but it's the precise dead spot for the FA20. If I keep myself out of the valley, the car wants to leap ahead and just GO! Splitting the Tach into two distinct rev ranges (idle-3500 and 5000-redline) is necessary. And it's something I'm slowly learning.

How hard was it to remove the stock tips? Big improvement over the stock tips. Good inexpensive fix.

No plates yet, still have the temp tag. Soon as I get the paperwok from the dealership I'll have plates and can post pictures.
