Closer inspection reveals...

I'm guessing the entire car will get re-painted, because more than 50% of the panels need to be painted due to either paint damage or complete panel replacement. Including: hood, trunk, roof, passenger door and fender, arch above the passenger door. The dents in the trunk are severe enough to chip the paint on the inside.

This is camera shy, but it cracked the paint too, passenger's door:

...And that's why I'm glad my FRS is safe inside a garage. I waited to leave my apartment and get a house with a garage before signing off for my FRS, for this very reason!

Im sorry this happened bro! must have been painful!

Survey Says....

Insurance adjuster lists repair cost at roughly $7,780. The hood, both front fenders, the trunk and the roof skin will be replaced. The rest of the metal panels are getting 'traditional repairs' instead of PDR, and the whole car is being repainted. And obvoiusly the tail lights and the windshield are being replaced.

That makes sense. There was no chance that damage came anywhere near costing enough for the insurance company to total the car.

At least unlike after an accident, once the panels are fixed it'll be good as new.

Well, "Costs you nothing" is definitely not true; I'm sure you pay a hefty price each month to have $0 deductible

Total it through insurance. Then buy it back as a salvage. Either sell for profit or build your dream track car!

I would do that in a heart beat!

My brothers $30k VW GTI was totaled. His buy back was $6k.

I've got appointments with two different body shops on the 15th to have the car re-evaluated. I also called the local Toyota dealer body shop, but they were too busy with their own 300+ hail damaged cars to give me an appointment. Although all three of the people I spoke to at the body shops said the same two things: No one ever gets the initial estimate correct, and The insurance reps always intentionally under estimate the damage. Example being my girlfriend's 2013 Juke that was parked right next to my FR-S during the storm. The Juke was estimated at ~$9K, less body damage than the FR-S but broken sunroof and water inside. Two days after dropping it off at the body shop that was going to repair it they called to tell her it was 'significantly more damaged' and would be a total loss.

The bumpers look pretty good (no dents, duh), but there's no point in washing the car now to check for scratches in them. (My paint is getting worse with the heat cycle of every day, I'll have to take pictures of how its now stress cracking.) The passenger side mirror cap is broken, and I'm also having to fight the insurance about using OEM tail lights. They gave me a line that, "Company policy is to only replace lights with factory parts if the car is under 12,000 miles and current model year." I'm calling BS on that statement. The car had 2,6XX miles on it and I'd owned it for 78 days when the hail struck. I'd also bet money that every one of these cars built from 4/12 through the end of the MY 2014 production has the same part number for the tail lights.

Shit happens, that's why you have insurance though. Even putting two new quarters on still wouldn't total it more than likely. I'd rather repair them on my own car before replacing anyway and this is what I do for a living.

Update

I took the car to some repair facilities today. The first shop is a network shop for my insurer and refused to even bring it in for an inspection, let alone give me a number. The second shop is independent, its also the same shop that took in my girlfriend's Nissan Juke. They were much more forth coming and the owner, Josh, chatted with me for close to 20 minutes after completing the estimate. He answered all my questions, and I feel much better about using his facility for the repair. Josh's estimate is about $13,770 and includes replacing the passenger side door in addition to the other panels already previously mentioned. He also stated that the driver side door is near the threshold for replacement too.

When I went out to retrieve my car two of the body techs were ogling the destruction. One of them happens to own a BRZ. He seems like a cool guy, and let loose that he hopes I bring the car in to them for the repairs, if just so he can see how it comes apart. His car got damaged from the same storm, but only about $1.5K.
