Yeah, but they aren't plinth boxes. And the main hoop, I'd prefer to see it tied into the bulkhead in front of rear seats, rocker area and floor with a proper box.

Better than nothing, but definitely don't understand dropping that kind of money on compromised safety piece.

That's what you want to see. or this.

^^^ this would only work in you are 5ft tall. I tried. In our cages the main hoop has to land in the area of the rear seat bottom to fit any reasonable sized human inside.

Seriously? So are the only guys racing Spec Miata's jockeys?

Those cars are much shorter and much narrower (I know it was my last track car).

You may have to bolt the seat to the floor, or make non-sliding custom mounting brackets if you are super tall, but if it's a race car you are already on non-sliding mounts anyway.

Mine lands on the leading edge of that "bulkhead" and anyone taller then 5' 8" will find it tight.

Apple to oranges, we are talking about the contour of the floor pan, over all size makes no difference. In my opinion when I mocked up the main hoop landing on the floor it was to close to the drivers head. I agree that having a 3 sided mounting plinth is best but in this application I didn't like how things shaped up.

First of all, frankly, I trust the guy that did the cage to have done it right. He does alot of scca race cars and is very well respected in the bay area. I gave him a tough challenge, I wanted a good looking rollbar that wouldn't make the car un-street able.

Second of all, the front of the cage is on plates/footing as you can see and that is welded into the high tensile steel that runs right through that area.

I agree he did the best he could given the constraints you forced on him.

I'm just saying as someone who has tracked on 2 wheels (and binned it) and 4 wheels, I wouldn't compromise the strength of safety item for looks. But that's me and everyone has to be comfortable with the amount of risk you are willing to assume.

I just wanted some of the less experienced what a proper tie-in looks like. That one plate in single shear is no better than a bolt-in setup.

Cheers!

It has been a long time since I looked at it, but I think it is more than just a plate that it is mounted on. I will look tonight and double check.

So yeah, the mounting plate is not just welded onto the sheet metal, it is actually a raised structure. I've attached a picture to illustrate.
