To be clear, I don't think either method is wrong. Sorta like where to put your hands on the steering wheel - it's whatever works best for you. That said, personally, I like to work with the car and not against it. The shifter in the BRZ is stiff - but has a solid feel. Other cars are rubbery and there's no feel for the gears. Bolt action vs stirring soft butter. With the bolt action feel, I like to feel the gears engaging. I never have to force it. With rev matching, each gear change goes in effortlessly.

Method 2 would definitely wear out your shifter bushings quicker in theory...

This just made me realize I have no idea what the shift linkage in the BRZ looks like. Must research!

Post a link when you find some good info. I'm interested too.

I just push it diagonally in the direction of 5th gear. Same with 3rd->2nd down shifts, pull it diagonally. It will zig zag on its own. When I was learning stick I got 3rd instead of 5th once. That was a surprise.

Every time I've tried shifting trying to draw the H pattern 2nd-3rd I've mis shifted. 5th gear you can do it much easier obviously, but it's quicker to just push it in the direction. Quickness is key because the revs sometimes fall very fast when doing a 4th-5th gear change. I just nudge or flick the shifter through the gates when upshifting 2-3, 4-5 and the shifter guides itself very easily through.

The shifter linkage is rod and joint connected to the shifter lever. It rotates and pivots.

Saw this thread, then payed attention to how I do it the other day.

It's probably like this in real life

2nd to 3rd.. I just push forward from the back (I don't "grip" the shifter). Benefit of the centering spring.
