This is a car my fiance and I share as a daily driver, so it needs to be reliable and easy to drive. Also, not sure if it matters for this purpose, but it gets driven all year and is running snow tires currently. I have a few questions regarding this kit as it seems to be very nice quality.

- I like the idea of making around 250rwhp for purpose of reliability and keeping the stock clutch. I also feel this is ideal for the chassis. Is this kit overkill for me or can I get a setup (perhaps base turbo?) that will fit that mold?

The base turbo will do 250whp @ ~5psi. Stock clutch should be fine at that level for a long time.

- In the idea of keeping it a nice daily driver, I was thinking of JDL catted front pipe and overpipe along with the Invidia Q300 cat back. Would that be a good way to go?

I've done 450whp on my personal car with a 2.5" overpipe, 2.5" catted FP and 2.5" catback. We've had cars do 290-300whp with the base kit @8-9psi and stock exhaust so you definitely can still make nice power and keep the car very quiet.

- Does JDL offer an oil cooler option? I've heard this is required for FI on these cars. If not, is there one that is preferred to go with the JDL kit?

We can and have done quite a few of them. Haven't had the time to market a universal one yet, but can provide one to work with our kit if requested.

- I will not be installing this myself, about how many hours would a shop typically charge to install this? For all parts; turbo kit, exhaust, cooler, gauges, tune and install I'd like to stay under $7k. Hopefully that is realistic.

Obviously this will vary from shop to shop. I would say the 2 most time consuming parts are trimming the core support for the intercooler and welding the bung on the oil pan. Typically it takes us a solid 8 hour day to install a kit and flash tune on a relatively stock car. We will have a "Long route" Intercooler option done in the next 2 weeks (FINALLY!!) that will not require any trimming of the bumper beam, however comes at the expense of much longer piping. We also have a core exchange program for pre-welded oil pans.

- Is the standard a-pillar pod with boost and afr (and maybe oil temp?) the most popular choice for the 86? Or are there some other clever mounting options?

We usually use a P3cars gauge on every install we do. Very discreet and looks OEM...Hard to beat.

Thank you very much!
Bill
Bill,

Hope that answered everything. Let me know if you need more info.

Hi Jesse, thank you so much for the detailed reply, this is very helpful. I really like the idea of running it at 5psi, sounds perfect for what I'm looking for. And the long route intercooler piping is something I would probably go for. The P3cars multi-gauge looks phenomenal! I like that it keeps the usable vent too, looks like a no-brainer.

I do have one more question about the turbo selection. For my goals, is there still a benefit with the upgraded ball bearing turbo? Will that same 250rwhp have improved lag and throttle response with the ball bearing unit?

You paying someone to install yours?

My opinion and i try to make it clear to anyone with the same question is that if you can fit the Ball bearing turbo into your budget then it is definitely worth it. The lag is improved slightly in terms of rpm's.. ( talking a couple hundred rpm's, nothing too major). The massive difference is felt in the transient response. How it builds boost on and off the throttle and in between gears. Kinda hard to measure this stuff on a dyno, more of a you have to experience it driving different setups. With that said the base turbo is still very enjoyable and the kit allows an upgrade to BB turbos down the road without changing any hardware.

No, doing it myself.. I'm one of those that if i dont do it i can't sleep at night thinking something's wrong lol. No but really i've done most of the work on my car so i'm pretty comfortable with it. I've removed everything that needs to be out including brash beam... installed catch can and clamped all the hoses from the cpc solenoid. Just need that kit here to start bolting on. I'll post some pics here once the stuff gets here...

For those who have installed their kits.. do you use high temp thread sealant on the oil feed line, if so which threads exactly. Going off the instrucitons from JDL i'm to use on the threads coming off the T(supplied for the feed line) but not on the thread into the block where the oem sensor was connected, wondering if also used on the thread into turbos center section? Another question and again this is particularly for the JDL kit.. does the manifold touch the block at any point. Looking at some pics and it seems where the manifold merges from 4-1 there's a point very close to the block. Thanks in advance, i want to leave as little guess work as possible when doing the install.

Thats what I hear from everyone. Hopefully everything works out and I get my kit in time. I have a deadline before we move the shop to the new location.

Soon to be owner here, CANT WAIT!!!! Recently ordered the Single Scroll/EL/Base PTE kit...only option elected being a pre-welded pan. A few questions for current and past owners (please forgive my ignorance, very new to this);

-What did you guys use to seal the oil pan? An actual gasket or a high-temp sealant? If sealant, what do you recommend (ThreeBond, HondaBond etc)

-Want to run a turbo blanket....the size and fit depends on the exhaust housing correct? From what I've read the PTE 4828 is offered in 3 different housings...anyone know which one?

-What do you recommend I pick up to make install easier, did you guys end up using any little here or theres (zip-ties, Loctite shit like that)?

-Are the SPAL fans louder than factory?

-I am going to be using a DT flash and go to start off with. I had planned on getting tuned by a guy local to me that's tuned the majority of the FI 86's that are in my area. He is incredibly respected and seems very honest. After speaking with him, he told me that the placement of the MAF on the JDL kit is horrendous and makes getting drivability dialed in well next to impossible. I really wanted to have a MAF in vacuum, SD in boost tune eventually so this was unsettling to hear this. What has been your experiences and your thoughts on this? Seems strange to me because the MAF is in the same general area as several of the other front mount/short intercooler kits. How the car drives in a publix parking lot is just as important if not more to me than spooling characteristics/squeezing power out.

Thanks in advance everyone!

I used the OEM toyota sealant. No problems there.

Unfortunately, I can't provide any info on this. Either ronnie or jesse can help you with this one.

Get the bumper bar and you won't have to cut the OEM crash beam. Everything needed comes with the kit. Just have tools and time.

-Are the SPAL fans louder than factory?
It's nothing you won't notice or be bothered by.

My experience is that I never had issues with tuning issues or drive ability despite being pure SD. It's really smooth and you would be quite impressed with the idle as well. Plus if you have a coupler pop off under boost, it'll run. Been there a couple times haha. Not to say that you should be doing that, but it'll still run and you won't need to be towed. I've been with delicious through many versions of their tune and some testing. Haven't had any issues. Stick with them and you'll have some good numbers and also a car that feels smooth throughout the powerband. You won't be disappointed. @DeliciousTuning and @sales@delicioustuning.com know what they are doing.

hope this helps.
