Keep in mind that the shifter is mounted directly to the transmission, so there's no cables or excessive linkages to mask the feeling. You feel every little mechanical nuance as you shift.

Secondly, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd use triple cone synchros, which are notorious for feeling a bit notchy compared to typical single cone synchros. I saw a pressure graph once that showed a normal synchro, and there was a single large bump and a small bump where the shifter came to a stop. The triple cone graph looked like it had a few extra bumps and then a final bump at the end, which describes the notchy feeling.

If the transmission is grinding, it should be worse at higher rpm. I've found mine (2nd and 3rd) feels notchy at low rpm where the rpm difference between gears is small, but shifts smoothly at high rpm where the rpm difference between gears is larger and the synchros have to work harder.

After I passed 10k miles my transmission started feeling noticeably smoother (and this was even during the winter). I changed to Redline 75-90 at 1k miles.

As far as timing the shifts, just keep working at it.

With 16,000 miles on my car, it won't shift into 2nd when cold. Sometimes I have to skip 2nd and shift to 3rd instead. When my car has warmed up it has no issues. If it won't shift easy into 2nd don't use force, just shift into 3rd until it warms up.

I have similar shifting issues as well, but it's getting better and I can't say whether that's more because I'm adjusting to my car or if it's breaking in (I about to hit 500 miles on it as well).

Don't worry, it'll get better!
I've noticed this too!! I recently put on a TRD intake onto my BRZ and the throttle response is worse. It requires more "blip" with your foot when rev-match downshifting, and at idle the first 1/2in of throttle input does nothing now! I don't understand why everyone in this thread praises this intake for improving the throttle response. I'm considering going back to stock, I don't do track days so drivability is more important to me.

Sorry to threadjack, I find the down shift to 2nd to be tricky. It seems like the synchros struggle to spin up the clutch plate if you're downshifting into second when the RPMs are greater than 2k. Double clutching should help, but I'm not very quick at that technique yet.

Maybe it's just getting easier to shift with the weather warming up here, so the trans oil never really gets too cold even over long periods...

On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.
