like most things in life, it's a risk/reward type of situation. you're not going to expect a pristine s2000 when the value has dropped more than 50%.

Starting price is 5k more than my Celica MSRP in 2000 (01 model) that seems pretty darn good to me for an 11 year difference. And a better car (I hope!)

Buying used is just an option, not necessarily the best option for everyone but if you're complaining about the price then perhaps you can't afford this car brand new. The saying goes, beggars can't be choosers. I just don't like the fact that as soon as you drive that new car off the lot, the price just drops by a couple grand. Not everyone beats on their cars. My brother in law babied his brand new 95 prelude for 10 years before selling it to me so there are good used cars out there. However, I would not buy a used car that came from a rental company or a dealer demo, those cars get beat on for sure. I almost bought an '06 S2k with 6k miles on it (barely broken in), which was a trade in at the same Honda dealer that it was purchased at. Rich people do things that some of us would think is crazy. I just think you should do what makes you happy with your money. If buying a new brz/frs makes you happy then whatever the price is, it's worth it. I'm happy enough just to enjoy someone elses used toys.

YES. They are using the fact they can not make enough cars due to their idiocy and turning it around and marketing it's rarity. Then they leave us in with the vicious dealerships that have us by the balls.

For what you get, I don't really think this car will be as popular as most of us think it will be. The market will determine if these are priced too high or not. Obviously there will be pent up demand at the beginning, but next year will be telling if these continue to sell quickly. I also tend to think that we may see invoice type pricing and maybe some rebates by next year. There is a lot of competition in this price range for sporty coupes and hatchbacks.

I really doubt you will see invoice pricing this year. Dealers near me are just not getting enough cars in this year it seems to meet demand.

This is basic economics. Supply and demand will determine price.

The Miata coupe in Japan cost the same as the FRS/BRZ nearly 10 years ago. Expecting anything cheaper is just unrealistic, I haven't seen anything other than unfounded rumors that would lead anyone to believe otherwise.

This is simply what creating well-sorted RWD car that conforms to worldwide safety and emissions standards costs. If the market doesn't support it at or near the current price, they will simply stop making them.

Old thread, but I'm surprised a lot of people think it's fairly priced. Now that it's been a few years and we can that the sales are on a steady decline.

On paper, it definitely seems overpriced versus it's competitors. But sports cars like Si's, WRX/STi's share a lot parts with siblings that are mass produced.

The twins share only a few components with other cars.

We can also look at Mustang's and Camaro's. They dominate the US sports car market. Volume drives down costs, just a fact of manufacturing.

As with any business, you're trying to make as much as a profit as you can, which you will reinvest back into the company. More Toyobaru's sold equates to improving the chances for a next generation.

If it can't do this, it gets killed off, like many other sports cars...

Holy necro thread batman!

This has been discussed in depth in the monthly sales thread. Yes car companies are in the business to make profit, but you also need to take into account the flow on effects like the effect on perception / image of a car company too. Toyota has, in recent times, been viewed as the white goods maker of the car industry ie bland, but reliable appliances.

The 86 has helped change that perception slightly so at least only 95% of their range is now boring instead of 99%. I left that last 1% as wriggle room in case I somehow missed a mind blowingly cool Toyota that missed my attention in the last few years. Oh and I said Toyota, the LFA is a Lexus so doesn't count :P


Also we were surprised at the price of the 86 in Australia. Surprised that it came out at 29,999 and not 39,999 for the base GT like everyone were expecting. Even at 40k AUD my BRZ is a lot of car for the money, relative to average price of other cars like say a Cayman at $140k AUD.


Nothing funnier than someone in the US bitching about the price of cars. Ask someone how much a Toyota Corolla costs in Singapore...

I personally feel a lot of cars are overpriced and the FR-S/BR-Z is not one of them. Show me a thrilling, RWD, lightweight, sweet handling coupe that revs north of 7k for less than 30k that you can use at 8-9/10ths on the road without fear of braking the speed limit by a huge amount? People think high HP means a good deal. In fact if you're not hitting up the track often then you wasted a lot of money. I have seen plenty Mustang GT's that drive along in a similar fashion to a Hyundai Elantra on my commute daily. What's the benefit to a car like that if you never extract 80-90% of its 430 hp? Its horsepower is the selling point of a GT. This is why I got rid of my 06 G35 coupe(heavy,isolated,feels like a sedan with good tq). The twins selling point is the chassis which you feel every moment you drive it and tool around town. I'm the type of guy that would buy a 320 hp Cayman S over a M4 or Corvette if I was shopping in that price. Feel>Power
