this. stock actually doesn't have shoddy build quality, while no name knock offs do. you can't make wheels with the same mold but different materials/processes. wheels require excellent build quality, period. there's no margin for error with wheels.

The problem with knock offs is that you can clearly see that they look different but these come pretty damn close.

But as Dimman mentioned, they are heavier.
I didn't realize that about Volk. I always associated the TE's with white and bronze. Good to know.

At least for me, can't speak for the rest of you, I'm not going to enter my car into any beauty contests/auto shows. So for me I could care less what others think about my wheel choice. In the end if I thought the stock wheels didn't look good I would just want something that looked nicer. That is subjective I know.

That is true about the weight and something worth considering, especially if you are a trackhound and that will make a difference in your time/placings. However I don't think that would bother me too much. They are still going to be lighter than many other wheels people on here will throw on their FT-86, even if they are not the real TEs.

I have not done an extensive amount of research on the wheels as I don't even know what wheels I would put on the Toyobaru if I got it or if I would just stick with the stock wheels. However from the limited amount of info I have read from other owners the wheels get good marks and no one has complained about the wheels exploding or combusting on them yet. If I decided I was still interested in them I would do more research and make sure about that. But from the preliminary info I have they seem like a good deal for the money.

Another thing you might want to consider is how they are built. TE's are Forged and not sure how these wheels are manufactured, maybe Cast perhaps.

Though they might look very much identical, they are probably worlds apart.

I had a set of Forged Magnesium wheels and those had to get them xray and trued frequently.

Check how a set of TE's are made! :happy0180:

A really good weight, to quality, to dollar wheel value are Enkei RPF1's. They also have a huge range of sizes and offsets. Depends on if you like the style, I guess.

I don't want to get into a whole knockoff vs. real thing debate as that has been done so many times and really gets nowhere in the end. Just because it is a knock off/generic doesn't mean it is of any less quality.

The above video is interesting, but honestly what did you think the Weds wheels video was going to show? That their wheels perform just as well as the cheaper "knock off" wheels for 2-3x the cost? Of course not. They are going to say and show their wheels are so much better. In the end that is just a bunch of marketing dribble, even if it is interesting. I would put more weight into it if it was some independent lab doing the testing.

I'm not saying the Varrsoten wheels are something I would go with. However they go through the same testing as other "name brand" wheels: Vehicle Inspection Association (VIA), Japanese Light Weight alloy (JLW) and TUV.

Now if for some reason someone feels they need to have the real thing and spend the real money on it, more power to them. But remember some people might not have the same budget as others. Some might not want to spend $5k on wheels+tires for a daily driver. Others might not see the slight performance advantage the real item provides over the "knock off" as being worth the added cost....etc.

Now being a name brand item still doesn't protect you from physics. Plenty of pictures showing those wheels being cracked. Ultimately any bad pothole, car accident...etc. can destroy that nice set of rims. So I think it is dangerous to think that just because you buy an expensive set of wheels that you are protected from them ever cracking. A bad hit on a set of wheels is a bad hit and can destroy any wheel given certain parameters.

For me, depending on what the stock wheels look like, I will probably just stay with the oem wheels and then buy some steelies for a set of winter tires.

Huh? So you have never used a generic drug instead of a current patent labeled drug? Never used over the counter stuff instead of prescription only drug? Ok then.

wow that could not be further from the truth. knock off's have drastically less quality, that's why people are willing to pay over double for the real thing. you get what you pay for and rims is NOT an area in the car where you wanna skimp. way too important part of the car.

this should be a standard in considering buying wheels as a starting point. Iv seen 1k dollar wheel break and iv seen a 200 dollar wheel break under the same impact. Iv seen some rotas explode into shreds hitting a curb, and some rotas just bend and get repaired. Iv seen Work wheels crumple at drift events, and volks warp badly.

Theres no magic spell that ensures top safety with top dollar everything is breakable, however a consumer should never overlook the quality and strength of a wheel. Even if the wheel is priced at a higher premium, if it yields a stronger impact rating by even a small margin, that small margin could be the difference between life and death during a critical emergency.
