The only difference is one is a lot harder to neg.. and it's not the Subaru. As for the OP, I'd call BS on that. These cars seem to be mostly 6MT cars (the ones that were ordered/sold so far anyways) so I'd be shocked if no MT cars show up.. that's a scare tactic IMO. Walk if the GM doesn't change their tune.

Try asking for the General Sales Manager, and the Client Relations Manager.
But I'll tell ya, my manager is saying we're only getting 3 - 5 FR-S for the year, and I'm at a relatively large store. Our first one is a Whiteout A/T and we don't know if we're going to get any M/T. [We better cause I want my dang Whiteout M/T already!] And I don't do the allocations, but again, my boss that does said he had no option to preference the first one, he said we're just gonna get a random one. We don't have a lot of flexibility on these cars as far as what we're getting/what we can trade for [again, according to people higher up then me]. So give them a chance. I'd say they understand you want the car, and you want, what you want. So they should do what they can to get you the right car, but to lose your place in line is what sounds messed up to me. You have a deposit in, so it should be honored.

I should have worded what I said more clearly, but they can't add an additional window sticker with mark-up. I had mentioned before that they get away with that by including dealer-installed parts written up at higher prices, but if they are including flat-out mark-ups on Scion cars, they can get into trouble with Toyota if they are notified of that kind of activity to the point where they will revoke that dealership's ability to sell the Scion lineup.

They have to sell to everyone at the same advertised price but it may not be a simple markup instead it'll be a $2 interior protectant for $3,000 instead of the normal $800. Regardless of how they are doing it, it's still not restricted to MSRP in reality. Sure, technically maybe but that's it...

However, as mentioned before, Toyota/Scion dealerships have found ways around it. Dealer-installed Scion accessories like wheels, body kits, etc. are also the same pure-pricing deal from what I remember, so those things would be sold at the exact price set by Toyota/Scion, so you cannot negotiate those either. But what some places do is install a non-Toyota/Scion part (like some cheap ass 18" wheels that look somewhat sporty but aren't made by any company worth talking about, let alone Toyota/Scion) and tack on $1,995 to the MSRP (as the charge for the dealer-installed accessories, which may or may not coincide with what the Toyota/Scion part would cost) but again stand behind the "pure pricing" explanation of why that additional price cannot be negotiated either, just like the cost of the car. In that case, they will use the reasoning of how Toyota can penalize that dealership if they are found to be increasing/lowering the sticker price (which includes any dealer-installed accessories), but obviously that doesn't include non-Toyota/Scion parts, but most of the time, the customer doesn't know any better and can't really do anything about it either. Or at least that's what some of the managers told me before when I worked there. But as I've said before, it's possible that the rules have changed since I last worked at a Toyota dealership five or six years ago. But that's how it was. |

Don't settle for this crap that they're feeding you! Either make them get the model you want, or go find another dealership that will. I'm a little confused about buying a new car that isn't configured the way you want it. If it's not already in inventory, I always thought you could order a car exactly how you wanted it and would just have to wait for it to be built. I mean, isn't this one of the perks of buying a new car?
Remember this is just a $25,000 Toyota, not some Ferrari so losing your spot in line shouldn't be a big deal. You're not going to have to wait 2 years for your car. There's only going to be a supply crunch on this car through the rest of 2012 at most and after that you shouldn't have a problem. I'm continually pissed off at how much Toyota/Subaru is trying to treat this car as something incredibly special and rare - when in reality the only reason it's hard to get is because they are being slow in ramping up production. Do not cave in for the A/T model. No offense to those that prefer a slush box but in a car like this I don't care if they offered it to me for $15,000, no way in hell I'd take that car without a 3rd pedal.

OP: Stopped by the dealer tonight, sat in the "first 88" (quote of the sales manager) car.
SE region is getting ~230 ATs for this month, 150 MTs. They have no clue what will be there next month. I talked to the Sales Manager Jeremy Dodson, go talk to him. They had multiple deposits for manuals, and confirmed the 15th for the next car they'll get. They also said they are random. However, there are manuals in the region and they may get one or dealer trade for it so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

That car that they are scheduled to get on the 15th is probably the one allocated to be sold to me, I'll be over there tomorrow regardless. Thanks for the info though!! I will have to look that guy up

I posted this in the regional forums, but I figured I'd put it here too;
Just checked out he white FRS they had in the showroom, and I sat in it for just a minute, but it fits like a glove!!! I'm 6'2" 215lbs and it fits me better than my NSRT-4 and I love how I fit into that. I talked to Jeremy and he says I won't lose my spot even if the first one that comes in is something I don't want. He was telling me that their total allocation should come out sometime this week. The Ultramarine 6AT that was supposedly aiming in today was changed to the 21st but he said that changes every day. And he kept calling it the "first 88", I wanted to correct him but I didn't care that much

I'm guessing it's because the market for the automatic variant of the car probably isn't the type to have placed an order well in advance. The enthusiast crowd preferring the manual transmission is the group who called their Toyota/Scion/Subaru dealerships well in advance. Additionally, those who aren't too aware of the car prior to launch who will probably like it once they see it are likely not enthusiasts and also will probably want an automatic... i.e. the younger female crowd who currently rocks the tC.
