Surprisingly many MANY rocket bunnies just cut the quarters and.. that's it. Not here though.

Cut, folded, welded, sealed. Just needs a shot of undercoating and it'll be done.

I'm not sure I understand. What would welding it do? And why not do the same with the front fenders?

Trying to gain as much information as possible before I cut mine up, sorry for the noob questions!

Switched over all the self tapping screws to rivet nuts and allen head bolts. Also finished up cutting the quarters and welded them up as seen above^

More random snaps of the sunk bunny

Oh and look what arrived from Japan.

I guess 265/35 Federal RSRs are on back order with an unknown ETA and have been since Feb so rather than run mixed matched tires, because I'm way too anal for that, I have bumped up my tire choice to Bridgestone Potenza RE-11. Will be picking the rear setup this Saturday as well as a few other goodies. Stay tuned.

When you cut into the rear, you cut into the inside of the car/trunk. If you don't fold the metal up and reseal it, you'll get all kinds of road crap in there as well as water, snow, etc. The front is a single sheet of metal, when you cut through it all you're looking at is higher into the wheel well therefore no welding needed, not that you could if you wanted to.

Is there anything to keep crud from getting between the original fender and the new fender? Like an extra liner i guess?

Sorry bud, just seen this post. Nah no extra liner, and the factory one has to be removed completely. Most kits are like this.

Think Id have to make something to cover that gap between the fender and the fender....at least. Maybe build a new liner from carpet like some of the OEM rear liners?

The wheel fitment planned will be too aggressive to allow any kind of liner. It's not that big of an issue though, my Miata was flared with no liners and just some dirt got built up in there but was easy to clean out.
