*editing this post* I/O limitation will be the write speed of the ecu memory, ecutek control unit, etc, ROM memory is usually pretty slow to write. So, having a faster SSD usually won't make a difference.

I have a MBP SSD, i5 processor 8 GB RAM and it takes about 3-4 minutes.

Maybe you have a better processor and that is the determining factor?

If you guys can post CPU usage figures while flashing you should be able to confirm any bottleneck.

Okay, so why don't we do some calculations then..

How big is the file being flashed? I think the stock map is 1.3mb (when downloaded from OFT)

Looks like the binary files are also about 1.3mb

I can pretty much guarantee that the data transfer speed is going to be limited by the ecutek cable and ISO specs for obd2. which doesn't make sense... because yes you should both be getting the same times.

unless the ecutek software is doing some serious processing in the back ground.. which wouldn't make sense because the file you are flashing is a binary rom file.

sportsguy why don't you open up task manager next time you flash. just watch for ram / processing going up during the process.

I have a Sager NP8150 that I use for flashing. I noticed that flashing takes about a minute and a half on one of my USB ports, but takes a lot longer on the others. I think its the USB2 that's faster than the USB3. Go figure.

That reinforces @mad_sb theory that it has to do with the driver being optimized for certain chipsets.

Yeah I think that's what the deal is. I'm gonna install ECUTek and W7 on an old Atom based Netbook of mine and see how fast that one flashes.

Let me know how it goes. I have my old MSI Wind back home. I would love to use this for tuning. As soon as I find it, mom chucked it in the basement along with the rest of shit as soon as I left for basic. lol

It may help a little bit. I would still say upgrade to an SSD just for the sake of everything else you use it for. I picked up a 480gb Crucial M500 and it has been AWESOME! 400+ mbps read/write. And I was already coming from a Kingston HyperX. I can't recommend these SSD's enough.

OK, my netbook, a Lenovo S10 Atom-based 1.6ghz 2.5gb RAM and some crappy slow hard drive running 32-bit Windows 7 Pro was able to flash my car in a little over 3 minutes with USB2. My Sager NP8150 with USB2 does it somewhere before 1.5 mins so this thing is more than twice as slow for flashing. Using my USB3 port on the Sager, it goes to well over 5 minutes (I stopped counting and went inside the last time that happened).

So the netbook is slower, but for the convenience and portability, I think I'm going to keep it as my main ECUTek machine for flashing and logging.

I will eventually upgrade, but I was planning to get a Samsung Evo SSD but I will look into the Crucial. Thanks!

I was wrestling between the M500 and the 840 EVO. Newegg was running a promotion on the Crucials so I went that route. The Crucial has nice hardware encryption but the Samsung is TLC which is still being proven.

They are both great just go with which ever is cheaper at the time. Check out some reviews on Tom's Hardware and anantech. They usually know what they are talking about.

Opened task manager, and it shows the CPU using between 3-4 of the CPU and memory sat steady at 21,00K of memory. The CPU jumped to about 21 when it reached 100% for a brief moment and that's it.

The Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro is like 70 seconds. But's slightly better than a tablet. Full Laptop support, dual USB 3.0 ports, has tablet/touch mode.

For what it is, I love it, kinda durable too #jamesjuniorproof
