Really easy to mix it up tho honestly. Especially in different contexts - like ending it in 'ed. Dampened or Damped? The latter just sounds wrong doesn't it?

Kinda like pronouncing Homogenous and Homogeneous. Many say Homogenous (4 syl; like homogenize); but correct pronunciation is Homogeneous (5 syllable; like homo-sexual).
